Western Clave 2004 TR
In a few words, another great time at the Western Clave. Good to see the
regulars (Warren, Willi, Snoop, Charlie Choc, rw, Bruiser, John Hightower, Randy Kane, Chas Wade, etc), our semi-regular claver from Cackalacky, Jeffie; and our very regular Indian Guide, Chief Joseph Metamucil McIntosh. Despite our well deserved reputations, we were able to get a few new attendees in Harry Mason, Lou Teletski and his friend Tom, and John Godfrey from Boise, and The Mighty Finn, Mike Makela. The campground selected by Clavemeister Warren worked out very well. It was centrally located to lots of water, had a good cafe across the street, had lots of trees, and a nice campground host, Billy. I wouldn't mind using this place as Clave Central again in the future. I made the short, scenic trip from Valley Center, Ca to the campground in about 18.5 hours, arriving at 12:30 in the morning. The odometer said it logged 1090 miles in that stretch. Can't understand why I was a little tired when Willi came by to go fishing later that morning at 6:30. Must be getting old. Friday, Willi and I fished the Madison across from the campground and then down at Raynold's Bridge. After having bought some of the green drakes at Penns last year, I thought that they were the largest dry fly that I would probably ever use. Wrong! The stoneflies that Willi had tied up to match the monsters hatching were the size of small birds. The fish liked them and I managed to hook up, but not land, several before I lost all of Willi's flies to the fish. Meanwhile Willi had.....well, ....you know...pictures on ABPF. Friday night Willi, John Godfrey (a friend of mine who finally made it to a clave) and I set up an assembly line and tied up a bunch more. After that, I can't recall which fishing trip goes with which day but........ Jeff, John Godfrey, rw, and I went to Indian Creek and had a good day on some beautiful water. Willi, John, John, Indian Joe, and I drove 215 miles of bad dirt road, got ran off a creek by mosquitoes, drove 175 miles of bad dirt road, had a flat tire (with the flat spare option), fixed said tire, drove 88 more miles of bad dirt road, fished for an hour, but capped the day off with chocolate and strawberry malteds at the Ennis Cafe. Good day...great adventure...no fish for me.... Fished Upper Soda Butte and had a good day with the little Cutts while some of the boys were at Rattlesnake Lake. Fished the Gallatin with John and John. John Godfrey caught a bunch! Fished the Yellowstone on opening day with all the ROFFians, 987, 437,983.2 other fly fishermen, and 3 buffaloes. (pics on ABPF) Fished $3 Bridge and caught a few at dusk with John Godfrey. Fished Raynold's Bridge with better than moderate success on the last Friday of the Clave. Ceded my holdings in the big hole just north of the bridge to Chas, who dredged the fish up until way after dark. Other highlights: No ROFFians became inebriated enough on raffle night to have their picture adorn the "Boobs and Butts" Wall of Shame at the Happy Hour Bar. I won a great shirt at the raffle. Thanks, John H! (Big Dale, your raffle gift left today) Charlie Choc managed to get his parts from African Axles "R" Us and join us. We also got to meet Ms. Choc, a delightful lady. Not so highlights: Charlie Wilson had to cancel. We missed ya! The redneck idiot in the campground across from us whipped out his chainsaw one afternoon and proceeded to drop a 40 foot tree right in the campground! Snoop left early with an ailment. (no, not the usual Honky Tonk Fever and attendant Gringo Butt). I fell down (dry Reided) three times in one day! Left a quarter pound of flesh in various cracks and crevices at the Ruby River. My hotel room in Las Vegas was on the 14th floor, no air conditioning and about 100 degrees outside! We gotta wait another year to do it again Many thanks to Warren for the organization of the clave. Good job, Bud. I had a great time. Danl PS....... A CD of the pictures I took is on its way to Warren for compilation into the "Clave CD". Those of you that have pictures of me, please feel free to email them to me (Hint, hint, esp. for Charlie Choc). |

From the looks of it, you guys made it pretty far up the creek, no? When I was there last year I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours in that area, but I stayed pretty near the campground. SWMBO and I had breakfast there and they had some pretty good Indian fry bread. [another little snip] Fished Raynold's Bridge with better than moderate success on the last Friday of the Clave. Ceded my holdings in the big hole just north of the bridge to Chas, who dredged the fish up until way after dark. IIRC, there was a big hole just east of the bridge above the little island. (I could be wrong, but I was thinking the Madison was running pretty much east to west at the bridge, before turning north towards Ennis.) Guys were lined up to fish that every day we were there. (We stayed in the second house above the bridge.) Other highlights: No ROFFians became inebriated enough on raffle night to have their picture adorn the "Boobs and Butts" Wall of Shame at the Happy Hour Bar. Ah, the Happy Hour. That was where SWMBO and I hung out after running around all day. It just felt like a comfortable place from the first time we walked in. Nothing like a couple Moose Drools on tap and a garlic burger to top off the day. (And their onion rings were killer.) Thanks for the TR. It reminded me of some really nice times in that area. And nice pics, as well. Chuck Vance |

Guys would start showing up there a little after dawn, and each time someone stepped away from the spot, there'd be someone else to swoop down on it. It actually sort of funny. :-) Thanks for the TR. It reminded me of some really nice times in that area. And nice pics, as well. You're welcome. Are you gonna attend next year? One of these days I will. I had thought about going this year, but funds and time are short, because SWMBO and I are off next week to Canuckistan for her high school reunion. She'll get to hang out with a bunch of old buds, and I'll get to fish the Crowsnest River. :-) But I intend to get back up to Mooontana soon, and I hope I can time it to be there for one of the claves. It looks like you guys were fishing all the same areas that I want to spend more time in. (Raynolds Pass, $3, the Gallatin just above the park (and Taylor's Fork), Indian Creek, etc.) One quick question while I've got your attention: In one of the posts about the clave, mention was made of Grayling Creek. We drove past it every day, but I never got a chance to try it. If you can tell me without giving away any "secrets", how did it fish? The section we passed on the way up to the Gallatin looked very promising. Chuck Vance |

Chuck,
There's a plaque on a rock near one hole in that stretch, with the name of a guy who used to fish there a lot. We actually did fine almost everwhere within a mile of that spot. And although Danl had an awesome streak going there, we could also probably call it the "Mr. Sunshine" pool, i.e. "Excuse Me, I'm working some fish here". That guy I could do without. And none of us saw him catch a fish ;-) If you really want the primo spot on all the river I saw, get a room at Slide Inn and get up early :-) bruce h |

Yeah the side channel looked nice, but we also got snubbed by someone who
claimed it was the stretch for Slide Inn guests... We moved on and I can get that kind of treatment on the stocked creeks in the area on open day, anytime, so I can't say that I agree that it was the best spot, at least during the Clave week. It reminds me of a similar stretch on the Little Lehigh Creek near Allentown where there are some nice sized beauties in there, but it's just not worth fishing most times because of the permanent resident fisherman (or at least they like to think it's their stretch). The only other people I ran into that seemed rather rude and discourteous were in the same area, above Raynolds Bridge. They would creek hop anyone in their way. I have to thank them really though because due to them, they chased me far enough upstream to run into that Island where I had such great luck bank fishing an Island with a family of Browns. I also saw someone move towards where he was staked out in the river, and after a short exchange (that I couldn't hear), the "encroacher" slunked away with his tail between his legs. :-} The guy looked really proficient, but he didn't catch anything either. :-) If you really want the primo spot on all the river I saw, get a room at Slide Inn and get up early :-) Hey, we were staying on the south side of the river, two houses upstream from the bridge. It was not much more than a long cast from the deck of the place to the river. :-) Unfortunately, it was more of a sightseeing trip than a fishing trip, so I just got some time in whenever I could. But even when I was up at daybreak, there would always be at least one guy already gearing up and ready to hit the water. And they always went directly to that hole at the top of the island. The next best-looking spot was the side-channel by the island. There looked to be a nice boulder there close to shore that created a pretty little seam. But I never got to fish that either. :-| But there *will* be a next time, garonteed. :-) Chuck Vance |

IIRC, there was a side channel and a couple of decent-sized islands where the river braided its way through that run. Fast water, but the side channel (on the near bank) looked pretty calm. We moved on and I can get that kind of treatment on the stocked creeks in the area on open day, anytime, so I can't say that I agree that it was the best spot, at least during the Clave week. I wouldn't say it was the best spot either, but it looked good. The area at the head of the island looked nicer, and evidently the "natives" think so too, as they immediately headed for that stretch. Was that the area right behind the Inn? (Or maybe it was just upstream of the Inn, I can't remember now.) I remember driving past that stretch and thinking that it looked promising. IIRC, there was a side channel and a couple of decent-sized islands where the river braided its way through that run. Fast water, but the side channel (on the near bank) looked pretty calm. Chuck Vance Chuck, really it all looked nice and full of fish, you just had to contend with the crowds. I think if you hit all of the water, you were bound to get a few nice fish, and maybe a bonus, or two, or more. I think the braids help give the fish some of the first good cover below Quake Lake, so the fish are there if you can figure out how to get to them. It's a stretch I will always be sure to take in when I'm in the area. Mike |
