I bet if he ties on your hook with the line he is using, it will break off
also. Sounds like crap line. Either old, or bad batch. I dropshot a lot with a 6# line and a spinning rod. No brake offs. I use mostly Trilene, or P-line in mono. What is the best line for drop shotting If we're talking standard drop shotting (light line, small hooks, small worms) I prefer 6lb yozuri hybrid or triple fish fluorocarbon. BUT any quality 4 to 8 pound mono will work. This weekend, I needed to respool my backup dropshot rod and found that I was out of 'the good stuff'. I ended up putting on 6lb Trilen XL that's been in my tackle closet for probably 2 seasons. Never lost a fish on it. also what hook is best? For my money, a #2 Gamakatsu drop shot/split shot hook, nose hooked in the bait. I have been having break offs where I tie the hook on with a palomar knot. Standard advice. wet the line before cinching the knot, make sure not to twist the loop before you pass the hook through it, make sure the loop comes completely over the eye and doesn't get caught in the notch where the end of the hook wire meets the shank, etc. RichZ© www.richz.com/fishing |

The guy's asking about a line, not a hook. Any hook will break off if the
line's no good. Same old Rodney... Fred, I love 6-8# green Stren or 8-10# Seaguar fleurocarbon for dropshotting. SNIP Standard advice. wet the line before cinching the knot, make sure not to twist the loop before you pass the hook through it, make sure the loop comes completely over the eye and doesn't get caught in the notch where the end of the hook wire meets the shank, etc. I find that last little tidbit to be great advice Rich. When I moved into superlines and discovered and started using the Palomar, I broke off a couple of hooks due to that very thing, the line (loop) got hung in the notch of the hook eye, I didn't notice it, and it will fray/nick and everntually break off right at that point. Needless to say, my *very next* pair of polarized shades were also prescription shades, so I could better see that my knot was in order prior to using it. Oh, and very definitely lube the line/knot prior to cinching it down. Luckily, most of today's lines are relatively taste free and a little bit o spit works just fine for me. |

I hear ya on the prescription sunglasses. Last year I had to start
bifocals, and wasn't sure how I'd like 'em. I only got my indoor clear pair with that type of lens. My polarized prescription sunglasses are still just for distance, so I have trouble with retying outside. Oh, well... next pair will be bifocals for me, too. I have had prescription bifocal sunglasses for several years - expensive, but worth it. Ronnie http://fishing.about.com |

That's part of the problem I fixed with the new hook,, no eye notch (where wire is bent into the other side) to cut the line That certainly sounds like a good design considering the amount of superline users out there, and the fact that most all the superlines recommend the Palomar. I really like the knot personally, easy to tie and appears to hold up quite well for me. |
