West Point 9/11/11

Sunday - September 11, 2011 - day 63

Flint River Bass Club tournament
West Point Lake, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM
Water fairly clear and 78 - 15 degrees cooler than two weeks ago!

We started before enough light to really run, especially since lake is
7 feet low, so I stopped on a nearby point and fished topwater and
spinnerbaits and crankbaits for about 20 minutes. NO bites.

Ran to my favorite topwater point and got three or four hits but
didn't hook anything. As the sun came up I picked up a jig head worm -
and hooked fish on my first three cast - a keeper, a throwback and
lost one that looked like a keeper. Messed around that point and
landed two more keepers by 8:15. All spots, and had to measure all,
they were 12.5 to 13 inches long.

Fished across the cove to a shady bank and saw a fish swirl - lots of
baitfish back in this creek. I threw a jig and pig to the swirl and
landed a bare keeper, just touched the 12 inch line.

At 9:30 I ran out to a main lake rocky point and landed my best fish,
a 14 inch spot, on the first cast. Filled my limit.

I fished everything I could think of for the next 5.5 hours, got some
hits on top and on worms but never hooked another bass!

At weigh-in it took 5 at 9.05 to win - he had a couple of nice
largemouth that hit on top. Second went to a guest fisherman with 4 at
8.50 and he had big fish with a 4.92 pound largemouth. Third was five
at 7.90 - he fished with winner and caught some fish after lunch on
spinnerbait. My tiny little spots weighed 5.15 and gave me fourth.

Only 7 largemouth weighed in - West Point is overcrowded with spots!
