Coroner IDs man who drowned in Winton Lake
GREENHILLS, OH (FOX19) -
A 23-year-old Forest Park man was identified Friday as the boater who died in an apparent drowning at Winton Lake. Caleb Simpson's body was found after a massive search and recovery effort Thursday, according to the Hamilton County Coroner's Office. Divers located him 12 feet underwater 30 feet away from Goose Island at the lake. They looked for Simpson for several hours after his canoe capsized about dusk or dark, around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Another man also in his 20s who was in the canoe managed to swim to safety, according to Springfield Township Fire Captain Jim Murphy. "One swam toward an island here in the lake. When he turned around and got on the island he didn't see his friend," Murphy said. "He shouted for him and didn't see him and that's when it's presumed he went under." The men had been out on the water and at Goose Island fishing even though it was closed due to high water from recent rains, Murphy said. Winton Lake is 156-acres and 18 feet deep, county records show. It's the second-largest body of water in Hamilton County after the Ohio River, Murphy noted. It was not clear Thursday why the men's canoe capsized. “The lake is closed whenever it’s flooded, which it is, and they are still releasing water to get it down. Nobody is supposed to be out on the water," he said. Lt. Greg Grimm, a park ranger, said this is the first time something like this has happened in his 24 years on the job. http://www.fox19.com/story/35338369/...ton-woods-park |
