I am planning to put old tyres out for peeler crab and hope someone can help
me with the following info.
Are ridge tiles better than tyres?
How long will it take to establish themselves?
What ground is best, sand, mud,stoney beaches. Are river estuaries any good?
How often should they be checked?

Probably, or a length of gutter. Whatever will stay put in your local
tides, some people swear by a section of corrugated iron.

Only a few days at this time of year.

What ground is best, sand, mud,stoney beaches. Are river estuaries any good?

All of these but sand/sandy_mud is easiest to work.

How often should they be checked?

Every tide.

Hi Tom
Tiles and short lengths of roofing guttering are less unsightly and just as
effective, try and place the traps as far out as safely possible and in mud,
as this will deter others from raiding your traps, I would say that river
estuaries are very effective as all the traps here in the River Mersey are
set within the first 2 miles of the mouth of the river, also the traps
should be checked at every low tide, to maximise the amount of crabs you
collect, also wear thick rubber gloves as sharp objects like broken bottles
or syringes can also be caught in these.

If you're not catching then a wonder bait won't help and if you are catching
you don't need it.

There's a new sooperdooper enhanced bait out every month or so. They're
great for catching rookie anglers but I never heard of any catching fish as
well as a decent fresh, natural bait.

Quite. If you're not catching with natural bait artificial bait won't help.

There are dozens of excellent natural baits to be had. It's a safe bet that
the fish will (mostly) be eating whatever is currently abundant locally so
the time to use peeler crab is when peeler crabs are plentiful, the time to
use or imitate small fish is when small-fry are everywhere and the time to
use artificial bait is when the tackle shop on the pier has got fed-up with
it not selling and dumped its entire stock over the side...
