For those who did, if you HAD any doubts about Kerry being some sort of
"breath of fresh air" or whatever, Tad Devine (...I wonder if he has to
pay John Waters a royalty to use that name...) on "Meet the Press"
should have dispelled any such silly notions. I figured there was at
least a small chance that at any moment he'd start stamping his feet
blurt out, "OF COURSE THE 'SWIFT BOAT' VETS ARE RIGHT!!! BUT IT'S NOT
FAIR, DAMMIT!!! We ed. note - his firm got screwed on Gore, and now
this!!! Mommy!!!" No such luck, of course, theater-wise, but
all-in-all, I give it a "thumbs up" as must-see TV...and I believe it's
repeated on MSNBC and on (some?) late-night TV on NBC affiliates for
those interested.

No such luck. Battled my way OUT of a campus run amok with tens of
thousands kids trying to move in all at once, drove all the way to
St. Louis to battle my way IN to St. Louis U, moving in my niece
who's a freshman this year. Then drove BACK to Chambana where all
the kiddies appear to be moved in well enough to be out on the town
drinkin' it up and careening about in their cars at high speed.

I did watch John O'Neill on NPR the other night. Oliphant laughed
in his face and called him a liar on national TV. At the end of the
segment Lehrer let O'Neill spell out his website then asked Oliphant
where folks could go for more info on the "other side" of the issue.
He snickered and said just read the daily press.

The so-called "Swift Boat Vets" wanted national exposure from the
mainstream media. A classic case of be careful what you wish for, you
may actually get it. Anybody who thinks they have one scintilla of
credibility is deaf, dumb and blind. The _Chicago Tribune_ ,the most
partisan Republican rag in the state of Illinois, had a piece in
today's paper debunking those lying sleaze.

The Swift Boat episode is further proof that Texas is a fine place to buy
liars. To bad we bought the biggest one they had four years ago.

By an odd coincidence I happened to see the same segment. I'm not
particularly interested in either side of this silly argument (4 months
in a stupid war 30+ years ago doesn't make you more or less fit to be
president IMHO), but Oliphant came off as a condescending liberal
elitist. While it may make those of you on the far left feel good about
yourselves I doubt it helped Kerry with the centrist vote.

I hear this "4 months" thing a lot. It's not only misleading, but false.
Kerry served two tours of duty in the Viet Nam theater, including not
only his dangerous swift boat duty, but also a tour of duty on a missile
frigate.

In the meantime, GWB was AWOL from his champagne Air National Guard
squadron stateside.

This is a new low in smear politics.

Well, he IS a condescending, liberal elite. But if you listened to
Oliphant tick off the facts of O'Neill's long history of failed
attempts to smear Kerry, as Nixon's surrogate immediately after the
war and John Warner's (then Navy Sec'y, now Senator and chairman of
the Armed Services Cmte) repudiation of that attempt, to all of those
Massachusetts Senate races, even the most partisan would realize the
guy has zero credibility. Besides, I doubt many "centrists" watch PBS
News Hour. That's the "secret handshake" of the American lefties. ;-)

I haven't been paying attention to the "issue", but from that segment
I think Oliphant hurt the cause. He could have been 100% correct, but
being 100% correct and a total elitist snot will get people rooting for
the other guy most of the time. Hell, I haven't the foggiest clue who
he is, but I disliked him....and I'm one of those undecided you folks
are supposedly trying to reach.

IOW, you're for style over substance.

Count me among the few. But I draw the line at "NOW with Bill Moyers" :-)
