Montauk Sportfishing Report 9/`13/04

9/13/04

The fluke shutdown is killing the party boats. Even on Saturday most of them
sat at the dock. They probably won't start sailing steady again until the
diamond jigging for bass becomes more of a reality. The sad part is that as
it stands now, unless something is done, the fluke regs next year will be
even more stringent.

The bass fishing is holding up nicely, especially for the porgie dunkers.
The only problem they are having is putting up with the bluefish and the
morons who steam back through all the drifting boats at full speed. At least
on the weekends, during the week, the place is pretty sparsely populated.
Most of the action is between Great Eastern and the Elbow, with some boats
fishing at the Sub Buoy.

The flyguys are starting to congregate now that the falsies are starting to
show up. I don't know if many are being caught though. All the ones that I'
ve seen have only showed for a couple of seconds at a time.

Offshore the little bluefins are still around east of the Butterfish Hole,
and one giant used to be there as well. It was taken on the SEA WIFE and
weighed 600 pounds. The yellowfin and longfins are out there to be caught,
but only for those willing to take the ride. If you want to catch them, you
have to start fishing at the 43400 line and work south.

Sharkfishing is in typical fall mode, with extremely big bluesharks and some
small makos around, but at least you don't have a long rune. The 700 line is
far enough.

Surfcasters are getting the itch, and will be here in strength next weekend
for the Montauk Classic contest. For information, check in with Vinny at
Freddies Tackle shop at 631 668 5520.
