That's just for the driver! 2 tru wedge = $500- $1,000. 2 more wedges
200, putter = $100+ and thats just the beginning! I was playing a
round of golf with a few buds and mentioned I was going trouting for
the weekend. They asked me to bring back some fresh trout and I had
to tell them it was C & R. They for the life of them couldn't
understand why I would fish and not keep em! Then the topic of
equipment came up and were shocked to hear that a good flyrod cost 100
and up. I told them it was in my hand 4 or 5 hrs at a stretch and
asked them what they paid for their drivers! Ya have a driver in your
hand for about 20 minutes during a round of golf, use it for all of 2
minutes a round. Different perspectives i guess. Bill in Va. Heading
for the Beaverkill in 3 days! Yippie!!!!!

You can get a more than adequate set of irons and woods, graphite
shafts, the works, for $250.00 on sale at most major sporting goods
stores anymore, and unless you're a professional, will play the same
game you do with a $1500.00 set of clubs. Guess what! The same holds
true with fly fishing equipment. It's the guy using them that makes
the difference.

Asides from posting a generalization that's a bit over simplified, you just
become the most hated man in every fly and golf pro shop in the country.

Golf is very analogous to fly fishing as far as equipment goes. You
can pay and play with as little or as much as you'd like. I play golf
with a 25-year old set. I just got into fly fishing and really like
getting new "stuff". Someone said, fly fishing is 20% about fishing
and 80% about getting more new "stuff".
I don't golf as much as I think it requires to much "dedicated time".
I can go fishing and quit in 30 minutes if I don't like the weather or
whatever. Golf- once you pay you have to play. Speaking of pay- I pay
$42.50 for a non-resident PA fishing license for the entire year.
That's one round of golf (about 4 hours, unless it's a weekend on a
public course, in that case it's 7 or 8 hours).

If you're like most of the flyfishing persons I know, you'll fall in
love with some of your early equipment, and like a grammar school
romance, it will have a special place in your reverie. Buying new
equipment is fun as long as it doesn't involve use of family vacation
funds or the kids tuition. I have a Browning Silaflex that I had
built in the early '50's and the memories that go with it are
priceless in my old age.
