Hi all
I am looking at taking up fly fishing but as I have no real experience I would like to know what you guys would regard as the best way to learn the techniques etc. Would the best way be to take a weekend fly-fishing course or join a club and try to pick it up from members? Thanks for any help you can give me. Nick G |

Yes. Both are good methods in concert with one another. Also, find nearby ROFFians and sponge off of them. Works for me. -- TL, Tim http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

Trust that you don't want to start learning on your own, unless, like me, you just enjoy standing around in cold water in pretty scenery whether fishing or not. You'll pick up bad habits and won't catch many fish that way, at least at first. And catching fish is a biggie for most who go fishing, fly or otherwise. Cyli r.bc: vixen. Minnow goddess. Once you have enough of an idea of the mechanics, take a weekend course (you'll get a lot more for your money by waiting until you've practiced a bit beforehand) and be sure to make friends with some other newbies. Then go fishing with them as often as possible, until you all have an even better idea of the mechanics of it all. Then start hanging around with folks who catch fish. --riverman |

Thanks for any help you can give me. Nick G I'd strongly recommend a copy of Mel Kreiger's Essentials of Flycasting video. It's terrific and a great place to get started casting if you can't make a class somewhere near you. |
