Gear Ratios

Another rookie baitcasting question.....gear ratios?

Which is best suited for any particular application?

Gear Ratios

About the only thing you'd WANT a low line retrieval rate for is deep
cranking with plugs that really put up a lot of water resistance by nature
of the size of their diving lip.

Just remember that it's the gear ratio and the spool diameter combined that
create the effective line retreive rate. In general, low profile reels tend
to have smaller diameter spools, so need a higher gear ratio to tretrieve
the same amount of line per handle revolution as a reel with a larger spool
diameter.

So....like a 5.1 to 1 would be for deeper crankbaits?

Again, it depends on the spool diameter, but reels specifically made for
deep cranking usually have ratios closer to 4 to 1.
