What is roff good for?

I was giving some thought to just what I'd gotten from a couple years of
fairly frequent visits to roff.

Thought I'd pass on the information.

(1) Encouragement to try a particular Idaho stream that I knew about, and
had seen, but had never fished ... thanks Russell
(2) Ott-Lite(s) ...I had never heard of them until rofft ... we have three
in the house now ... if you tie, buy one ( if you don't tie, start ...
nothing improves one's fly fishing as much as the information one gains as a
byproduct of tying )
(3) A modified rod grip that makes it comfortable to hold one's hand much
farther back than the "stock" version ... thanks Mike Connor
(4) Tippet rings ... just starting to experiment with these, but by using
Pitzen knots one can obtain very near 100% tippet strength as well as
several other big advantages ... thanks again Mike

That's it .... off hand I can't remember anything else I've found on roff
that has improved my fly fishing .... what specific things have others
learned here ? ( yeah, about fly fishing )

FWIW, if you join JoAnn Fabrics preferred customer club, they'll send you
coupons good for 50% off anything in the store. That's how I got my Ott
Lite at half price.

I second that. Though Mike C can be as cantankerous as can be the rest of
us, I have learned so much from his posts that it's definitely worthwhile
reading them.

I believe I recommended fishing Silver Creek and the Big Wood in the
fall and you had a good time.

I've met my best fishing companions through ROFF, and from them I've
learned a very great deal indeed.

Not much. Um........well, virtually nothing.

Like some others (I presume), I arrived quite some time ago at a point where
I'm not much interested in learning anything more about the mechanics of
fishing. As a matter of fact, it is no longer really that much about the
fishing for me anyway. I rarely fish alone. Virtually all of my fishing in
the past four years (apart from a bit of desultory casting when and where I
happened to have gear with me when visiting a piece of water for whatever
reason) has been in the company of the marvelous people I've met through
this newsgroup. A shared love of fly fishing is reason enough to get
together with these folks......but any of a number of others would do as
well.

I will never forget the time George left me to drown in the Wisconsin
River.......or Wayno's ass shining in the moonlight......or uncle Wally's
smirk as he admired my fish and invited me to go back to the cooler and get
a beer.......or that flea and tick infested bitch on the porch......or
John.....um......well, John doing whatever it is that John does.....or
sausages on the banks of Penn's......or Joel fishing at 11 degrees
Fahrenheit up to his ass in snow.....or Jeffie's bloody and half scabbed
ears.....or dancing in spandex tights on a bridge near Coburn.....or
copperheads on the trail.....or Frank shouting, "What?" from WAY too far and
in the wrong direction from where he was making all the noise for which I
was taking his and the Lord's names in vain.....or the holy hand
grenade.....or putanesca sauce......or Petah receding in the distance on the
trail.....or Dave and the speed bumps......or shrieking
ospreys......or........

Yeah, I know that's not what you asked above.....but it DOES speak to the
question in the thread title. :)

1) Tying my own flies
2) Tying my own leaders
3) Nymphing
4) Good equipment recommendations (and what not to buy)
5) Casting and mending techniques
6) Learnt grammer and speling real good

This one is too good for the list, but I've made many good friends; some
I've met, some with whom I've fished, and many more I plan to meet. We
futz around in this place and spar openly, but there isn't a day that
goes by where roff doesn't put a smile on my face and/or make me think
beyond myself.

Then again, I'm one warped puppy.

I thought it was a very appropriate answer, and I think many here would
share the sentiment in not the specific glowing ass memories.
