REQ: Amber sunglasses
 

I've lost my old green sunglasses, and all I've found up here have
amber glasses, although polarized, at a Fishing and Hunting store.
Now, I am wondering if amber color will do as good when the sun goes
down (best time for flyfishing), its rays hitting straight into my
eyes .
In one word: to protect from the sun, is amber color equivalent to
green one?

I do not have any good information on which colors may 'protect' better
from the suns rays but most sunglasses (all?) have some rating about
what the protect your eyes from (maybe fashion sunglasses do not need to
protect) from UVA and/or UVB.

I have amber and copper lenses that both specify that they protect from
harmful sun exposure to the eyes.

The real difference in the color of the lenses has more to do with the
conditions you are using them in as I understand. I used to fish almost
exclusively on trout streams. In my area though these are mostly covered
allowing little light. My choice in lens color was more for fishing
function rather than to protect my eyes. I always looked for the
lightest amber lens I could find for the low light environment. The key
was finding polarized lenses to permit better sighting of fish on the
stream. The amber lenses amplify certain colors as well providing good
contrast. Green lenses would never have been appropriate.

I now fish mostly in sal****er on the flats. Polarized lenses are still
critical as I am sight fishing in shallow water. However there is much
more exposure to sunlight and eye protection is also needed. I have both
amber and copper tinted lenses which provide better visibility in
differing conditions from low light in the morning to bright light mid
day. I have green lenses but rarely use these. I understand that
offshore fishing is a good use for these lenses it does provide better
relief for the direct and reflected light that is a constant.

I think I am pretty close on all this info but any reputable
vendor/manufacture of sunglasses will probably have all this info on
there site. I will include a link to a site where I have purchased
sunglasses. There are much more expensive brands available and some are
worth the money (I have yet to purchase a high-end brand myself).

For the money the 'Flying Fisherman' sunglasses are hard to beat. Some
models are available at Wal-Mart and you can find them at some local
tackle shops as well.

i use amber for nite & fog driving they cut out the glar of on coming
cars, high lites the road & cuts though the fog i'll have to try them
for the out doors in day lite.
