Very weather dependant.

If *cold* and calm then whiting are likely.

If after a decent blow (not during, far too dangerous) and the water is
still coloured then maybe a chance of a cod.

If the water is still fairly warm there might be a late bass close in.

There are bound to be few pout and the odd dogfish.

But tbh I wouldn't advise a first trip to the Chesil at this time of year
unless you have someone with you who knows the venue well.

Have a cool Yule yourself.

I live on Portland and fish Chesil fairly often. You have the right idea to
fish at night as it is poor during the day. Abbotsbury is ok, I haven't
fished there much. All I usually catch are doggies on Chesil but you may
find codling this time of year. It has been fairly poor lately. I prefer
Church Ope Cove on the east side of Portland as there are usually Rays, Bass
and flatties this time of year. I doubt that there is room for six to fish
there though. You might be better off fishing Warbarrow Bay during the
January springs, see this months Sea Angler magazine in the where to fish
section.

As for bait, take Rag, Mackeral and Squid and don't forget to cast one rod
close in about 30 yards out as it is very easy to over cast the fish. Give
Weymouth Angling Center a call to book your bait as they have the best Rag
in town and good advice on conditions, 01305 777771 website
http://www.deepsea.co.uk/shops/weymouth_angling_centre/. Also take a look at
the sea fishing forum here http://www.seafishingonline.com/, my name is
Portland Jon on the forum. They are a friendly bunch and we have regular
trips all over the country.

I am always happy to fish if you want me tagging along.

Jon
