Digital Camera Recommendation?
 

Santa brought me a Wal-Mart gift certificate and I am interested in a
digital camera to take on fishing expeditions in the unlikely event that
Bugcaster actually catches a fish so I can record his one-in-a-lifetime
achievement. G

I subscribe to Consumer Reports and they evaluated digital cameras,
recently, and picked the Nikon Coolpix 2200 as a best buy in the 2 megapixel
range. First of all is 2 megapixels okay for your normal fly fishing
pictorial chronicle and has anyone had experience with this camera, or would
recommend something else?

I think 2 megapixels is fine for the kind of photos most of us take while
fly fishing. If you're going to do a lot of enlarging and manipulation of
images you'd want more. Of more importance is probably to try to get
something that is easy to use, preferably with one hand. There are some
water resistant digital cameras, but they tend to be pretty expensive. I
don't know about you, but I wouldn't put an expensive camera in my vest
because if the water doesn't hurt it, the rocks will.

I have (had, actually) a Minolta Dimage X. It wasn't water resistant, but
was about the size of a deck of cards and had an internal optical zoom so
the lens didn't protrude. Optical zoom is important. Digital zoom is almost
worthless, IMHO. I also have a Canon point-and-shoot film camera that fits
into a vest pocket and takes great pictures. It's rugged and water
resistant, and is what I keep in my vest. If I want digital images I can
get Walgreen to give me a disk with my developed film.

I also have a Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 5-megapixel with 12x optical zoom.
It's a good camera but it'll probably never go fishing with me.

Pentax WR 4.3 is waterresistant. If you want a small "always in the fly
vest" kind of camera, I'd go for the Pentax.
I use a Fuji S7000. Its not a small "point and shoot" cam, but the picture
quality and the feature list on the cam, makes up for the size/weight -
which isnt that bas either. Nikon also makes good cameras. Stay away from
"wannabee" brands like HP, Trust, Logitech asf.

Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Minolta and Pentax are all good brands.

One thing you should look out for, is the batteries. Get a cam which has
some easy available batteries. The small rechargeable
"one-size-fits-only-this-model" kind of batteries are nice in size, but when
you run out of juice, it's nice to know that nearest gas station has some
batteries that fits in your cam :o)

Pixels are only a must, when you wanna print your shots. For web use, 2mp is
more than enough, and actually my old Canon A10 1.3mp was superb for net
pictures.

If all you are going to do with it is take pictures while fishing that
should work. If you plan on using the camera for other photo opportunities
then you may want to look at other cameras. I own the Nikon 4100 cool pix
and a Minolta Dimage Z. I fine the Minolta takes much better pictures then
the Nikon but the camera was more expensive.

Look for optical zoom and not digital zoom. The more pixels the better
quality the picture will be at large size. What type of batteries the
camera takes should be considered also. If you like the option of using
regular alkaline batteries or using a special type of rechargeable battery.
Either way carry spare batteries with you. Invest in a larger memory card
then what comes with the camera.

....well Chris, as luck would have it I just bought the Nikon Coolpix 2200
online for a measly 99 bucks, helluva deal and a neat little camera. For
the same reason you wanted a camera...I love my Oly 4000 but it is a tad
big for carrying on fishing float trips, and it does get in the way some
when I'm rowing. (hanging on my neck, of course) I have been taking
pictures like mad just to see what it will do. Indoor pictures tend to be
a tad on the darkside (software will take care of that) but it takes
outdoor pics very well, I am totally satisfied with this camera. It does
have internal memory (about 14mb I think) and of course you can buy a
memory card for it as well. I just bought a 128mb SD card for it for *6
bucks*.
Ecost is selling them online with a 20 dollar rebate, this deal ends on
Dec.31
This little bugger has 3x optical zoom and macro capabilities and for a
"cheap" camera has other neat features. Go for it.

Take a look at the water resistant Olympus cameras as well. The nice
thing about the Olympus cameras -- one hand operation. Slide the
cover open and the camera is on -- take the shot, slide cover closed
-- all with the just right hand. I have the 410 which is a 4MP camera
but they make a 310 also that is less money.

I bought an Olympus D-535 back in October. I can't say anything about
other models, but this one is pretty good for the price......I paid
about $145. It CAN be operated with one hand, but it's a bit awkward
because of the flat front.....it doesn't have the sort of projecting
ridge for the right hand to close around. This camera also has a hard
time focusing in low light conditions. I've been very pleased with
the picture quality overall but, again, it doesn't handle low light
very well.

I spent several hours in the company of a Russian physicist on
Saturday. Alex takes things electronic very seriously. He was using a
Canon A75, whose features he explained to me at great length. For an
extra $30-$40....what he says he paid for it....it looks like a lot
more camera.
