Fishing Around Boise ID
 

I may have an opportunity to visit Idaho, near Boise. I was
wondering if anyone could advise me as to fly fishing possibilities
there. I know that in the northern part of the state there are many
good places. I was wondering about the Boise/Nampa area.

Hi Gene,

On previous bidness trips to Boise, a friend of mine has taken me to both
the Owhyee River and the Middle Fork of the Boise. The Owhyee is just across
the state line into Oregon just west of Nampa. The Middle Fork is about an
hour's drive east of Boise. Perhaps some more local person can help. Also,
check with the Boise Angler flyshop in downtown Boise.

Are you sure that wasn't the South Fork below Anderson Ranch Dam, Danl?

The South Fork of the Boise has some BIG rainbows. You have to time it
right to avoid high water from the discharge from Anderson Ranch Dam.
It's the only river I've ever fished where the Pink Albert was the go-to
dry fly (mid summer).

I've heard that the river above the dam is also good, but I've never
tried it. It's on my ever-expanding list.

BTW, I'm not "local" to Boise. Boise is 120 miles and 2 1/2 hours away,
in good weather. The only homebrew store in Boise recently went out of
business, so I have little reason to travel there, except to buy guns. :-)

I fished the South fork of the Boise Dec. 30th (visiting wife's in-laws and
took advantage of one day away with my cousin). Had a couple hookups
sub-surface, but no fish to hand. I didn't see any fish rising, however it
was cold and snowing.

took advantage of one day away with my cousin). Had a couple hookups
sub-surface, but no fish to hand. I didn't see any fish rising, however it
was cold and snowing.

It's possible to book a guide for a raft trip on the South Fork. This is
the way to go if the water is high. I've never done it so I don't have a
contact.
