Any Ideas For Tying Flies For Sunfish (Bluegill or Bream) Fishing?
 

My 82-old-father has been tying flies for many years. Lately, he has
been tying flies with a Number 10 hook with a lead head at the eye and
white chicken feathers and/or imitation white fur. Does anyone have any
new ideas for making flies to catch Sunfish (also known as Bluegill or
Bream)? My father likes to fish for Sunfish more than any other species
of fish, so this would be a big help to him. He, and I, would
appreciate it if you could help us out.

Lawrence, your Dad is very wise. Sunfish are the best fish to fly fish for
and give the most fight per ounce of anything on this planet (IMHO). I have
some many wonderfuly fishing experiences catching bluegill on a fly. My
favorite bluegill fly is the Bully's Bluegill Spider by Roxanne & Terry
Wilson as mentioned in their book by the title Bluegill Fly Fishing & Flies:
Illusions in Fly Tying. I tie it both dry and wet and have had great
success. I do love catching them on dry flies.

get cork poppers, back in the early fifties, from a company named "Conrad's"
I think. The small poppers were about the size of a pea, with a bit of deer
hair out the tail. I paid 5 for $1.00. You could get bass poppers for the
same price, and they worked great.

Anyway, from my experience, when bluegills are nesting, you can have a ball
and it doesn't seem to matter what you throw at them. I once caught an 11
1/2 incher (around 1955), and in New Jersey that wasn't bad.

Weighted Prince Nymphs (12-16); Zug Bugs (14-16) and Copper Johns
(12-18).

These are all sub-surface flies that get to the fish and make them
active. Add a little twitch to your rod to give the "bug" life and you
should be in business.

Here are some bluegill flies that have caught the most fish
consistently.

Green rubber spider with white rubber legs. - get a package of the
shaped spider bodies from a tying supplier, its a lot easier than
cutting and shaping them.

Ants - red or black. McMurry ant made with bits of painted balsa wood
is the best.

poppers - i have the best luck with small white poppers with white and
red feather tails, but lots of other colors work too

Timberwolff wet fly. - don't see this one in stores anymore but have
tied up lots and they work really well. - lead wire weighted, yellow
chenille abdomen, red floss thorax, brown hackle and white wings.

bivisible - all hackle with black or brown hackle from the bend and
finish with a couple of wraps of white at the eye

Other flies work sometimes and some places but these are my old
reliables. They have caught thousands of bluegills for me.
