Feedback on GPS

I want to buy a GPS and am strongly considering the new Lowrance GlobalMap
3500c [color]. My dealer is willing to order it for me BUT he strongly
suggests I would be much happier with a Lowrance 4000M [greyscale]. He said
his experience with color is that is washes out in the sunlight. Also the
4000M has a much larger screen than the 3500c. Please share your thoughts.

I don't really have an opinion about screen size but it would seem logical
to get the largest size that you're comfortable with and will fit on or in
your console. My recent experience with screen wash-out in bright sunlight,
though, has been just the opposite as that of your dealer. That may have
been true with some of the older units but not any more. I recently
replaced an older grayscale LMS-160 Map with a color LMS-330c and
discovered, to my amazement, that viewing even in direct sunlight was
excellent and was much better with the new unit than with my old one. I'm
so impressed with it that I'm considering a new color sonar unit for the
front deck.

It's not my money but I'd say get what you want!

I don't have any color LCD fishing units, but my thoughts on anything
washing out in sunlight is that it is a weak argument. 10:1 chances are that
you're going to be wearing polarized fishing glasses out in the sun anyway,
and you have to weave and bob to get to see the screen at times as it is,
even with greyscale units (polarized glasses, at certain angles, make any
LCD screen appear solid black). I can't imagine color units would be any
different in that respect. Besides, I'm sure it has some sort of
brightness/contrast display controls to adjust for changing light
conditions.

All my digital cameras' and video camera's LCD screens are color, and I've
never encountered sunlight so strong that I couldn't see their displays.
Bright light can make it difficult at times, but I've never found it
impossible, and very seldom even find it aggrevating.

I say get what *you* want, based on the features and price you want, and
don't worry so much about what the dealer told you about sunlight viewing
problems. Bright sunlight viewing problems are going to be inherent to a
degree in ANY model, color or grey IMHO, and unless you're a big time
touring pro, shouldn't be the key factor in your decision.
