Pistol Grip Rods

I received a pistol grip fishing rod but I don't know how/when I am suppose
to use it. Could someone also recommend a reel to pair with it?

I have a grand total of two pistol grip rods. Both have Zebco 33's on them.
Both are 5'6". On the rare occassions when I am tossing a spinner bait in
close quarters I'll break one out.

I have two 5-1/2 foot pistol grip rods that I use with spinnerbaits as well
as soft plastics when I'm fishing back in the flooded timber or buckbrush.
They're fine rods... just about as long from the reel seat to the tip as my
6-foot worm rod. They're not for limp-wristed sisters, though..... a big
bass can make you wish you had that extra ten inches of butt during a
battle.

I have Abu Garcia reels on both of mine.... the old, red, round ones that
I've had on them for the past seventeen years.

Short, pistol grip rods are great for making, short accuradte casts in tight
quarters.

I have a 5'6" MH that I love to throw spinnerbaits with around docks, shoreline
wood or when I'm fishing from shore.

What power and/or action is your rod?

Depends on the action. I like pistol grip rods for casting spinnerbaits and
crankbaits, but like short, 5.5 foot rods with lots of backbone. I caught a
5.68 pound bass in a tournament today on a Fat Free Fry using a pistol grip
Berkley Bionic 5.5 foot rod, Ambassadeur 5500 C reel and 16 pound Stren
Magnathin.

I like that outfit for light crankbaits and it is my favorite Trick worm rod,
too.

My favorite spinnerbait rods are two Berkley Lightning Rods I bought years ago.
They are pistol grip 5 foot 2 inch rods and I have Ambasssadeur 5500 Cs on both
of them. Also like them for buzzbaits and jigging spoons.

Mostly used when you go out fishing, but one could use it at home to practice
a little bit I suppose!

I remember when pistol grip rods were THE rods to use for bass fishing, back
in the 70's. My first rods were pistol grips, and I probably caught my
first hundred bass on them lol. Wish I was 13 again...

I have a Fenwick HMG 5.5' pistol grip rod that I use for either lighter
weight lures, or for times in tight quarters where I may need to throw a
spinnerbait, crankbait or even t-rigged worms. It's a M action rod but has
plenty of backbone considering the use it gives me with lighter weight
stuff. I keep a Daiwa Procaster on it, and it makes a fine casting rod IMHO.
Amen to whomever added it is not for the limp wristed, it doesn't have that
long handle found on modern trigger sticks and strength/leverage are at a
premium when fishing these puppies.

Here's a link:

http://tinyurl.com/3o5sd

It's the top rod in the list of models, the only one listed with a "pistol"
grip.

I typically carry this pistol grip, 2 "trigger sticks" (typical long handled
casting rods) and 2 spinning rods with me and it fits into the lineup quite
nicely IMO, and it is the lightest action road among the bunch.
