Flouro leader question
I saw a post last week about flouro leaders on superline and folks were
panning on Vanish as a line/leader material. My news server has lost those posts. Can you guys give your recommendations (again) for flouro line, knowing that it is primarily going to be leader material for me? Thanks. |
Just a few comments on flouro leader. It works really well when fish
are "line shy", and on real sunny days, if the fish aren't line shy, or it's overcast, your probably wasting your money. It also kinks very easily, so it needs to be replaced often. We tend to start with normal mono leaders, if fish are around, and not biting, then we switch over. Or some guy's fish with flouro and some fish mono. If the flouro guy's do better, we all switch, if they dont, we stick with what we have on at the time. |

Well, our lakes here are very highly pressured as a rule. And without any appreicable precip, our water also tends toward clear. So in my experience, our fish here do tend to be line shy. I'm just looking to increase my productivity since I use braids primarily, and I know they have to be more visible in shallow/clear conditions than clear or "invisible" mono or fluoro, and am just trying to take my skills to the "next" level. (LOL! From rank amatuer to advanced novice) I tried a made-up pattern this past December, just before Christmas, of using clear leaders on crankbaits in deeper water. While our water never gets *that* cold (central NC here), the fish do move deep when it chills. And heretofore, I've never been very adept at catching any of them during these times. Well, that pattern worked, and the several times I got out in December, I found the fish, and got them to bite on crankbaits that were tied to a 3'-4' Vanish leader, at depths greater than 25'. This was the first time I'd been able to get these deep/cold fish to bite. Matter of fact, it was the first time I was able to catch a fish above the local lake's 16"-20" slot all season (caught a skinny looking 24 incher, I figure it was in the 6-8lb range.) So it was all good, I could keep using my favored braid, in places that it didn't seem to "work" before, and I am just looking at expanding that pattern/method for this year. Just trying to get a leg up on being able to fish my first ever tournament this coming month (March), as I don't want to let my partner down. He was so nice as to invite me to fish with him afterall... |

Seaguar Carbon Pro for main line (I also use it as leader material), also P-Line Fluorocarbon (even Fluoroclear isn't bad). If you want a straight leader material, NOTHING (IMHO) beat Seaguar GrandMax, I have seen things done with this leader line that would blow your mind. Granted it is very expensive for the amount you get, but again I have written before, when it comes to landing either a trophy of a lifetime or cashing a check in a tournament, money shouldn't be an issue.
