Do people really catch 10+ fish all the time?
 

I have a confession. In my 20+ years of bass fishing I don't think
I've ever broke double digits alone. My best days are always around
6-7 bass. I've been fishing with a couple of guides, I even came in
second in an Orlando Bassmaster tournament, but I just can't seem to
catch bass in quantity. When I read posts on this site and in other
places it seems that it's common for people to be catching 50-60 fish
in one day! On the other hand I've been watching a show called "Angler
on Tour" and this guy, who is a pro bass fisherman, is only catching 3
or 4 fish a day. What's up with that? Do I just suck or is everyone
exaggerating?

P.S. In that Orlando tournament, the owner of the boat I was in came
in first!

I think it's more a case of people not exactly talking about their bad days
on the water, combined of course with the occasional tall tale ;-)

I'm thrilled to death if I have one 50+ day per year. The most I ever
caught in quick succession was two years ago at Lake George, NY, before &
during the NJ Federation Six Man Team Tourney. In four days of practice I
boated over 300 keepers, well over 50 per day. My numbers were down during
the tournament because I was concentrating on quality, not quantity. I
ended up finishing fourth & weighing the biggest bag of the tourn on day2,
about 15 pounds. What a week that was! I just got a call from my club
president, seems I'll be joining them up there again this June.

3-5 bass is a good day, you should measure the trip in the over all
enjoyment you had not the number of fish, Seeing a Eagle or a Osprey
really makes the trip memorable
I fish a pond loaded with 12-18'' bass, I the Spring we catch 50-70 in
3-4 hours and in the Fall we are lucky to catch 10..
I have never met a fisherman who exaggerated, I swear I haven't..

Well I can attest to 100 and 150 fish days on Lake St. Clair during the
spring with the average being around 3 ½ pounds with a couple 5 and 6
pounders in there but you can bet when it comes time to fish a tournament
their gone and I'm happy with a good limit. When I say in a day that's about
4 hours because after 4 hours of fighting smallies your arms hurt your wrist
hurt and your ready for a break and a good meal.



Even in the summer you can boat 50+ fish in a day but their not as big but
still keepers



Now if you think I'm pulling your leg ask Jerry Barton Now with Jerry in the
boat it's more like 75 to 100 fish because Jerry's old and slow and can't
keep pace hehehehe or is it that he just can't catch fish! I forget. All I
know is if I get 5 fish in 5 cast's he starts screaming that I'm back ending
him lol this on an open flat.

I know St Clair is a bass factory,so is Champlain.

I have had a number of good days on St. Clair. Spring is best! I kept a
log one day because I just wanted to know how many I really caught (keepers
only). 23 between 7:00 & 8:00 a.m. 21 between 8-9 a.m. 19 between 9-10
a.m. 12 between 10-11 a.m. 16 between 11-12 Noon. 9 between 12-1 p.m. 8
between 1-2 p.m. 6 between 2-3 p.m. 114 keeper fish all between Delphine
channel and mill point drifting the shipping channel breakline (actually the
flat just on top of). Biggest fish that day about 5.5, avg. about 2.5 .
Primary lu CCST 3-1/2" tube with 3/16-ounce ball jig with Owners 3/0 hook
inserted inside. Primary rig: 7' MH GL3 Loomis Spinning Rod and Shimano
Stradic Reel spooled with 8-pound test Fluorocarbon line (Stren that day).
That area is always been known for numbers, but weight usually sucks for
tournaments (best tournament finish from that area 15.72-pounds). My best
weights comes from spots on the middle & north channels (best 26.86 North
Channel)

Hi Chuck,
I have lots of 6-10 fish days. I also have a pretty good share of 20-25
fish days. I even occasionally have 0-3 fish days.
Much of it depends on the body of water I'm on, or the weather. I think
an even bigger factor is how often you get out. You get out often enough,
you're bound to run into more of those incredible days we all dream of! I
get out an average of once a week when the water isn't quite as hard as now!
:-) I would also say you're style of fishing has a lot to do with it. You
will definitely catch a lot more bass on a small crankbait then a larger
one, but the fish will also average smaller in size. Same with a worm.
Smaller the bait, more fish. I typically lean this way, cause I'm not
usually concerned with winning a tourney.


Ohh, and some people exaggerate profusely. :-)

My record is 18 in about 4 hours on a small lake. Average weight about 2.5.

BTW, I really like Angler on Tour with Joe Thomas. I like it because he
seems honest. If he has a terrible day, you know it. I like to watch
fishing shows to learn technique, lures, presentation, etc., not to watch
some guy haul in one fish after another. Needless to say, the kind I like
are few and far between.

Anybody know how we get Joe to air a little earlier than 11 PM?

Joe Thomas is a great, classy guy. I fished against him all last year. At
Oneida I had gotten my limit of smallmouths & was in a weedy cove
desperately trying to get a kicker largemouth. In comes Joe & starts
fishing the same general area as me. It's late in the day (day1) &
downright nasty weatherwise. Joe & I get close & he asks me how I'm doing.
Told him I got the sm limit & was looking for a lm. He said that's what he
should have done, and that he went for the lm all day & only had 1 small
fish. The cool thing was that on day2 I went right to my sm spot & 5 min
later up pulls Joe. He had found the same fish as me! We both had pretty
good days on day 2. That was the only time in 3 tries I beat him in a
tourney. Class guy that Joe Thomas.

My record is 18 in about 4 hours on a small lake. Average weight about

BTW, I really like Angler on Tour with Joe Thomas. I like it because he

Trust me guys when I say this is gospel. It's pretty good when you have to
just stop, put your rod down, and shake your hands because they ache so much
form reeling. And, I still say he back ends me, all the fish get caught in
the front of the boat.
