Canoe...Fishfinder...Am I crazy?
 

I kinda think a regular marine battery is out of the question, it being
a 15'6" canoe and all

Not sure what a 'regular' marine battery is, but I use a Minn-Kota with
battery in a 12' canoe with no problems

charger would cook and swell a gel cell after a couple of times.

What is a decent charger for a small gel cell? A standard automotive
charger would cook and swell a gel cell after a couple of times.



Use a 500ma rated dc power supply with clips on the leads. I'ld just vut off
he end and solder or crimp on connectors to connect to the battery. Charge
for 14-16 hours for a 7 ah battery. Its easy and cheap for a charger. The
big drawback is that if you use one you have to remember to disconnect it
because it has no overcharge protection. On the other hand at only 500
mills it will dissipate quite a bit of overcharge as heat before it will
damage the battery,

If you need some of those batteries or power supplies drop me a line Bill.
I keep a couple cases on the shelf in the office.

I have a couple of power supplies laying around. As to overcharge. Get a
$5 timer from Home Depot and take the "ON" tab off. Then set the charge
time hour many hours you want before the "Off" tab turns the timer off. No
"on" tab, so charge is complete. Went this way after cooking a couple of
trolling motor batteries. I do not use a portable fish finder at present,
but thinking of getting another Kayak besides my tandem and then I will need
one of those batteries.
