PowerPro line question
 

I just bought a surf rod and new reel from the local southern Maryland stop
and they outfitted me with this line I have never used before. First on a
good Penn reel they put 20 some odd yards of mono line then tied on this new
PowerPro 40lb test line that is quite thin for its strength. I tried cutting
it with my leatherman and clippers and durn if it would not cut it!

Anybody have any thoughts on this line? It really out casts any mono I have
ever used.

I am thinking of putting it on my Bass rods in the next 2 weeks to try it
out.

Oh they say it will (should) last about 5 years before needing to change it,
which is also new to me but then I have not tried any of the new lines
avaible other than this. (An old mono guy)

First off 5 years is a bit of a stretch, maybe a half a season,depending on
where and how often you fish.

Get yourself a pair of them childrens safety scissors, the one's with the
rounded edges. They cut through that line like a hot knife through butter.

The reason for the mono backing is because that braided line tends to slip
on the reel. A piece of electrical tape works just as good. I like power pro
but use the Stren braid. I think it holds up better JMO

Thanks for that scissors tip Randy,I have been using a pair of culprit braid
blade scissors and they pretty much just saw the line.
Now just to decide whick of my kids will be "losing" their
scissors......................

***I've been using PowerPro line since it was first available in my area,
and it's great stuff. Very thin, as you found, very tough and it's quite
sensitive. I simply use my pocket knife to cut it, but I like to keep my
pocket knife shaving sharp.

***Out of the 25 or so rod/reels in my boat, all but two have PowerPro on.
I prefer it over mono and most other superlines.

***I doubt that you'll get 5 years of use out of it, but it will last far
longer than mono. When it does get really fuzzy and I start having breakoff
problems, I simply reverse it by running it onto a different reel. Then,
the well used/abused section of the line is at the bottom of the spool where
it's rare to be used, and I'm using the "fresh" line that was at the bottom
of the spool. I usually end up replacing the line on the spool when I
simply have cut and re-tied so often that I no longer have enough line on
the spool.

Another reason: $$! Filling the reel 2/3 full with cheap mono and
finishing up with the expensive line can save big bucks, especially if
you re-spool frequently. Also, you can extend the life of expensive
line by reversing it, i.e., lay the line out across the yard, clip it
off at the mono backing, re-tie the used end to the backing, and
voila!--new line is on top.

PP is great stuff. Takes a razor, sharp knife or sharp scissors to cut it
without "fraying" the tag ends.

Half of my bassing rigs are spooled with various weights of PP, and all my
striper rods are loaded with it as well.

It'll work fine. Just be sure you watch the water clarity. Even the "moss
green" appears visible in ultra-clear water, IMO.

I change mine every season, even though it still appears quite strong.
Generally, I do this due to the fact that the line will lose its color over
time with any semi-regular use. I left some on an older rod when I first
switched to it, to see about its longevity, and it has never given me any
problems other than color fade, and this season will be the fourth season if
I leave it on there yet again.

PP is pretty decent stuff. I respooled my main five rods with it in
different weights. I 'm gonna see how it works out for different stuff.
I'm only gonna have two rods spooled with clear line next time out. My drop
shot rod, and one rod for plastics if I fish any gin clear water.

PP is pretty decent stuff. I respooled my main five rods with it in
different weights. I 'm gonna see how it works out for different stuff.
I'm only gonna have two rods spooled with clear line next time out. My
drop
shot rod, and one rod for plastics if I fish any gin clear water.

I agree Bob. Except that I even drop shot with it now, I just use a clear
fluoro leader to do it with. And I will use it ahead of a mono or fluoro
C-rig leader too. Caught fish both ways, on pressured waters that tend to be
clear no less.

I just would never use it (PP) alone in very clear situations or drop
shotting without a clear'ish leader. Just to be safe ya know.

I recommend the using UNI KNOTS when tying up with PP. The UNI KNOT is the
only knot that has never slipped when using 20lb and 30lb PP.
