when buying a used boat in the winter months, when all the lakes are
frozen, what things should be checked before you make a deal? |

If there is a boat dealership close by that has the facilities to test
the motor, and inspect the boat, I would insist on that. Without putting it in the water, you are going to have to rely on your own judgement and knowledge of the "package" offered. There are some really great deals offered in the off season, so it is not a bad time to shop around, and buy that "toy", just take some common sense precautions! If you don't know the seller personally, or someone who does know them, then make sure you check the paper work out to your satisfaction before exchanging any money. Like I said, wintertime buys can be really good...or really bad...just be smart is all! JK |

If at all possible, check EVERYTHING to insure that it works. Pour some water in the livewells, make sure the recirc pumps work, check all lights, guages, walk the entire deck to make sure there are no soft spots, look in the compartments and rod lockers for mold/mildew. Look for signs of cracking in the transom area, check the hull for dings, dents, loose rivits, cracks, excessive wear. Look at the trailer tires, are they wearing evenly? How's the trailer wiring and bunks/rollers? Take the boat to a GOOD marine mechanic and have a compression check run on the outboard and make sure that all cylinders are within specs. Look at the overall condition of the rig. Does it look like it's been taken care of? A boat can be used, that's fine. But you want to avoid one that's been abused. It's going to take some time and possibly some money as well, but would you rather spend $50 upfront and find that the motor is about shot or spend several grand (or more) and find out the hard way? -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |
