First good spring day
About three saturdays ago, I hit one of my favorite local freestones.
I picked up two whitefish, 5 browns and 7 rainbows in about 3 hours of nymphing. None of the trout type were all that big (the largest being 14" but most around 9-12"). The largest whitefish was 17". But then my buddy and I went back this last Sunday. Man, oh man. It was mostly whitefish, but I caught two rainbows that were spawners coming out of the Yellowstone. One was 19" and a good 3 lbs. The other was 17", not as heavy, but still nice. My buddy caught another that was in the 17" range too. Then I topped it off with a nice 17" brown that seemed to be pretty ****ed that he got hooked. With the whitefish, my tally was around 3 dozen fish in 4.5 hours of fishing and between the two of us, we landed over 60 fish...and of course sent them all back to grow bigger and/or continue to feed for the spawn that will be starting in a few weeks. Now I'm just eagerly waiting for the march browns and caddis to get going so I can break out the dry fly box and work on my sunburn. |
