Biots smooth and fuzzy
 

wrapping biots I seem to have trouble consistently getting a smooth ( or
fuzzy, whichever is the goal) body, even though I've seen the info about the
notch placement to control this. Is there some other indicator ( I'm
thinking maybe the natural curve of the barb) that I can use, sometimes,
especially with turkey biots, I can't really see that 'notch" and kinda
guess.

The notch is basically your indicator. Just be carefull that you dont twist the
biot on the
first wrap.

I think that may pin point my failures ... thanks, I'll pay more attention
to that

Are you cutting the biots from the stalk thus leaving the notch behind
on the quill?

Harry Mason has a terrific tute on biots at www.troutflies.com with

I think it would be possible to work out the biot 'sides' if you knew the
side of the bird the original feather quill came from. Finding the notch
might be easier unless you have the skin.

It's partly a vision problem, I need more help seeing the notch on some (
not all ) biots I pull off than I need for the rest of the tying process

But I think, mainly, I'm twisting the biot on the first wrap, getting
hurried and not taking greater care

Larry, try Harry Mason's tip to press the biot down and around against the
hook before winding (step 5):

It usually, though not always :(, prevents twisting.

Trim off the point a bit. If you look close most are already
twisted.The further up you trim the more uniform the distance between
the ridges will be when wrapped. Soak the biot a bit as well.
