motor for fishing boat

Hi All

I am getting a 16 1/2 foot Alumarine Aluminum fishing boat. I have a
choice of a 20 hp yamaha 2 stroke or a 25hp yamaha 4 stroke. I am
concerned about the weight of the 4 stroke engine but I like the low
noise level. What are things I should consider when making the coice on
the motor. Cost is not a big factor as they are prtty close on price.

2-Stroke engines have less parts and thus are easier to maintain and probabaly less
expensive to maintain as well.

Do both engines have DC generators and if yes, do they generate adequate power ?

Weight is a factor and you have to look at the the total wight the boat can carry minus the
Engine and then copare the load and see if you can bear the same number of people with gear.

I would go with a 4 stroke. No smoke and quiet while trolling. I think
both may be underpowered for a 16.5' boat. I would get a test ride in a
similar powered boat before ordering.

20 or 25 HP !!! Is it a cost issue? My 16' jon is rated for 50HP, and I
use every pony of it.

I was curious about the power myself, but I don't know. The 50 HP Force I
used to run on my 16' jon pushed it ok, but now that I have a new 50HP Merc
I know that old Force didn't put out 50 ponies. Since I can run 32+ and
still slightly over rev with the Merc, and the Force only pushed it to about
28 or 29 with a very light load. I am guessing the Force only put out about
40HP. In my round about way I'm getting to the point. Anyway. I blew a
headgasket ont he Force one day, and I had to run on one cylinder for about
tens mikles back to the Marina. It ran 18 to 20 MPH on one lung. Not bad
for running at less than half power. So a lighter 20 or 25 HP motor might
be satisfactory for the original poster

On the other hand as I mentioned in my other post, I run a 50 on my 16
footer and I use every pony it can deliver.
