Bryson City, North Carolina
My springtime trip to the Old North State is officially
booked. Me and Kipper the hound will be fishing the waters of Graham County, North Cackalacky from May 8-13. We'll be staying he http://www.rockcreekcabins.com/index.html We're not the best of fishing partners, one of us is always more interested in splashing around and being a nuisance than in actual fishing (and Kipper can be a pain in the arse too ;-), but I'd love to get filthy, stinkin' drunk with any roffians who happen to be in the area. If you plan to be around send me an email and I'll give you my cell number. My cell phone doesn't usually work in the mountains (and that's a feature not a bug ;-), but I stop on the Skyway most days to check messages. -- Ken Fortenberry |

However, shouldn't you be a bit more careful about posting such to the 'net .. . . you never know what creep might show up! (insert: wit, dry humor, comradic comments, greetings and flicitations...) Hell, I don't care who shows up, I'd even hoist a glass with dumbass, yuppie beer snobs. The only caution is that you take the hound disclaimer at face value. Charlie Choc's sons were targeting smallmouth one evening and Kipper waded right into the middle of it effectively ending their fishing. We're gonna do Slickrock, Snowbird, Santeetlah and some new to us little streams that Jeffie mentioned one time. We have to stay out of the Park, they don't allow dogs in the Park, so that means no Hazel for us. So basically we're pretty poor fishing companions willing to share a meal and/or a drink or two at the end of the day. Would be good to see your creepy little self again in any case. ;-) -- Ken Fortenberry |

So ol' Kipper isn't well trained -- doesn't obey voice commands. What are you going to do when goes after a raccoon on public land? Shoot him? -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Kipper has passed all 10 elements of the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) test. It's just that in three tries he didn't pass all 10 on the same day. He's trained well enough to suit me and if he catches a coon I'll congratulate him and tell him what a good hound dog he is. -- Ken Fortenberry |

The best I could hope for is a skunk or a bear. I'll hope for a skunk. There's no reason for poor Kipper to suffer too much, as long as you learn your lesson. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

I'll hope for a skunk. ... Kipper is 70 pounds of Coon Hound - Husky mix, ... we think. He's a shelter mutt rescued from the Champaign County Humane Society as a 16 pound puppy. Kipper has had both bear and skunk encounters. The bear made off with Kipper's kibble but she ran away from Kipper not the other way around. As for the skunk, Kipper figured out just exactly when, in the dark of night, to get the hell out of Dodge. The whole area smelled of skunk as Kipper came back to the campfire wearing a ****-eating grin and smelling no worse for the wear. He has hybrid vigor. He's a real dog, not like those overbred, half-senseless, dimwitted pure breeds you spend a ridiculous fortune to have specially bred for lethargy and compliance. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I currently have two mutts and two purebreds (a Golden and a Border Collie), and I've owned quite a few dogs -- both mongrels and purebreds. It's not so much the genetics of the dog that determines whether it misbehaves (like running after game and disobeying voice commands), although genetics makes a difference. It's the commitment and the competence of the owner to train the dog properly. I also have two very well fed cats that roam outdoors, and that to the best of my knowledge don't kill birds, much less raccoons. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |
