Reducer
 

I have just bought a Greys Orion M2 does anybody know what the reducer is
for,
Is it just for winding in, or can I cast with it without breaking the rod.

AFAIK reducers are provided so that the effective length of the rod can
be made longer for casting and reduced for retrieving.

Is it ok for pendulum and off the ground with reel up then?

Don't know I don't do beach fishing, or use a rod with a reducer.

Suggest you email the manufacturer at and ask
them.

It is called a reducer because that is what it used to do.
Before the current trend of slim rods, the butts on the old beachcasters
were too thick in diameter to fit the coasters when casting with the reel
on the bottom of the rod.

A slim section was made to fit into the bottom of the rod to attach the reel
to.
This reduced the diameter of the butt, hence the name. "Reducer"

These days I believe it is used when fishing with the reel on the bottom of
the rod, during winding in,
fitting the reducer section effectively puts the reel further up the blank.
making the task easier.

As for casting with it fitted, don't forget what is is designed for and
check that the joint in adequately reinforced.

According to the following extracts I think you should be OK casting
with it.

The new twist n lok butt enables the length of the butt to be extended
for casting and shortened for playing fish.

rod into a fishing rod in seconds. Long handles have always been a

Whilst this refers specifically to Uptide boat rods I believe the
principle is the same for all rods with a reducer, which I believe is
more intended to reduce the length of the rod when playing fish rather
than reduce the diameter of the reel seat.

You use the rod reel down the butt, about 6 inches or so from the end, and
plug the reducer in to retrieve.
