Who pays for the countryside?

One factor that the anti-hunt/fishing/4x4s in the countryside mob miss
every time is who pays for the countryside. The grouse moors exist
because people PAY to use them. Areas of the ountryside are left fallow
for fox dens etc because people PAY to be allowed to hunt. There are
fish in the country's rivers because anglers have a vested interest in
keeping watch on pollution and ensure fish stocks are maintained. Guess
what they PAY for the privilege of fishing. So remove these interested
parties...who pays? The soft-shoed vegetarian residents of Islington? I
doubt they would wear a 1% increase in their taxes to maintain the
countryside. So what happens then? The farmers sell up...industry is
allowed in...and what is left of our "green and pleasant land"
disappears under concrete and tarmac.

Yep, that's about the measure of it. We get the government we deserve.
