Madison River Flies
 

Okay folks, having never been to the Madison before, I'm tying flies that I
"think" will work from associated hatch charts.
One thing, I would like to tie for evening fishing. Is there any hatch in
the mid-July time frame that comes off consitently at dusk? I use some
glow-in-the-dark Krenick thread to make the flies easier to spot, but need
to know what flies will get this treatment.

Keep in mind that twilight is around 9:30pm there that time of year. I think
Jeff Miller was the only one fishing that late last year. g

Hmm, the last time I was accused of doing something fishing related that was
unethical, I was fishing for carp in the UK with my fly rod. Out fished the
locals who were chumming with maggots 5 to 1. Unethical works for me.

Man, you are the luckiest sumbitch I have ever heard of. Here I've just
completed building the world's first fully automated, self-contained,
absolutely accurate, Madison River Fly Testing Lab and you (yes, *YOU*)
could be my first customer. Wait, what am I saying? Customer would imply
some form of payment from you and that is certainly not apprapos for my
first customer and a fellow ROFFian. Let me do this for you, Frank....the
bugs you want to tie are comparaduns, sizes 14, 16, and 18; colors from
medium/dark tan through the various shades of yellow (not too bright!!) and
on into the greenie/olive hues. Just pack up 14 of each (I'm trying to get
the darn machine calibrated a little better so as to only consume 12 flies,
but until then...) size and color combo and send them immediately to:

Whew! I thought it would be at my expense. So, you're saying that I'll be
dunned if I send my flies to you? Then again, since you're testing them, I
guess I'll be compara-dunned.
By the way, as soon as I get the tritium levels right, I'll send you the
glow-in-the-dark flies that didn't make the cut. Right now, the level is a
bit high. Good looking flies, though. DoE guy from next door said
something about a lot of Rads. I guess that's good, right?

MADISON

Daytime Dryflies:
Fish the deepest water in the middle of the river.
Forget about bankside riffles. Too many boats and too many
fishermen chase the fish out of those spots by 8:00am
every morning.

Use all the typical western stuff: House and Lot, Royal Wulff,
grasshoppers, Trudes, Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis.
Even the old stuff works: BiVisible, Renegade, Royal Trude.

Consider a Hopper Dropper, with bead head dropper of some
kind. Fish the deep fast water in the middle of the river.
If you use a big foam hopper you can even drop a weighted
Woolly Bugger off the back of the hopper.
Fish the deep water in the middle of the river.


Wetflies:
Montana Nymphs, Prince Nymph, Bead Heads of any kind.
Fish the deep water in the middle of the river.

Streamers:
They work better when it's cloudy, or better yet raining.
But they do sometimes work during the day, especially if
you fish the deep fast runs in the middle of the river.
Use what ever you like. Pattern doesn't matter that much.
Use giant Roadkill Streamers if it is raining.

Evening:
Same as above. But smaller dry flies can be added to the mix.

Fish the deep fast water in the middle of the river.
