Digital camera for vest
 

Sometime ago several posts recommended a digital camera for your vest. My
usually impeccable files have some way become discombobulated. I would
appreciate any comment and recommendations again.

I just got a Pentax Optio WR. Seems to take decent photos - although I haven't
given it a good workout yet, is waterproof class 8, and is nice and compact
(about 4"x2"x1").

I just got a Pentax Optio WR. Seems to take decent photos - although I
haven't
given it a good workout yet, is waterproof class 8, and is nice and
compact
(about 4"x2"x1").

My just made it through Penns and at least one dunking. Love it.

If I had to buy one now, I'd go with the Pentax Optio WP. Small,
waterproof, & 5 megapixels. RW said he didn't lke the fact that is used
an unorthodox battery but he's retired and more likely to go to out of the
way places than I am. I fish the beaches around Los Angeles and Santa
Barbara - no problem getting batteries.

That Pentax Optio WP should work just fine for you.

I'd love to have a good waterproof digital camera, but my next major
trip is a 12-day float in Alaska, so I need backup batteries.

Lately, I've been taking many fewer photos. The photo thing was
interfering with my in-the-moment thing.

You can get spare Optio WP batteries on eBay for $3.99 each.

None of the cameras I have now uses 'regular' batteries (although the D100
multifunction battery pack has a AA adapter) but luckily most of my travel is
with my trailer and it has a deep cycle battery I can use for recharging, and I
usually move around often enough to keep it charged. I'm thinking about a solar
panel for trips where I don't drive around much.

....you didn't say what price range you're looking at, so I'll offer
another suggestion, less expensive than the Pentax mentioned.
The Nikon Coolpix 2100 or 2200 2mp will fit in the palm of your hand
and takes standard NiMH rechargeable batteries. Find it on ebay in the
$125 range +/- you can still find them brand new in the box. This
camera takes fine pictures and is the one I use instead of carrying my
bigger, heavier Olympus. Invest another 30 bucks in a waterproof bag,
use the camera in the bag, from http://www.waterproofcases.net/410.html
and you're safe from Reiding your camera. HTH

Been looking at the same camera -- can't find any info on battery life on
their site. I know that batt is a Li-Ion, which should last a while, but I
can't find any info on roughly how many shots a batt will last.

Any info?

The spare battery package I got says "up to 2 hours run time on a single
charge". FWIW, the startup time on the camera is very short so there is no need
to leave it on for any period of time.
