What is Your Reel of Choice ?
 

All else being equal, what is your preferred reel of choice ?

1. Spinning Reel

2. Fixed Spool Reel

3. Spinning Casting Reel

4. Closed Face Fixed Spool Reel

5. Bait Casting Reel

6. Multiplier Reel

7. Casting Reel

8. Fly Reel

Why? Just what are you on about? These reels ae designed for multi or
specific purposes.

All of these are generally interchangeable. Some lower quality models do
not cope well with fine lines, all fail sooner or later with thick, stiff
line. #4 is rarely of use in the uk except for those who cannot manage a
centrepin in freshwater.

The smaller models are not really up to anything except open ground work,
they just don't have a fast enough retrieve or enough strength to cope with
even ordinary graunch. Many people would be better with a big fixed spool
off the beach.

Casting reels are no meant for fishing. I presume they are designed for
tournament casting when distance is the only object.

A pity the OP missed out the class of reel I use more than any other - the
centrepin. In freshwater I use them for everything from trotting for dace
to trout and salmon bait fishing (yes even spinning sometimes) and in the
sea I take them when fishing for mullet and bass off the beach and for
almost all boatfishing.

Clearly he doesn't actually fish for anything so there must be an angle
(pardon the pun) but I can't be bothered to work it out.

Fished Stocks reservoir yesterday - very hot & sunny but with awkward
east wind. Caught 10 fish floating line and buzzers fish slow over
deep water. 20' leader of fluo. Odd fish rose in afternoon and I got
one on a suspendrer pattern.

I had an evening a Spring Hill (Kent).

Not much showing on top by I got my two fish on a Shipman's. The technique
(pay attention everyone!) was a bit inventive.

Firstly I made sure the Shipman's was well Ginked up.
I use 4lb b/s Fluorocarbon tippets which sink.

So, after casting out the trick is to allow the tippet to sink (it'll never
drag the fly under) and give a good "twitch". The fly goes under for a few
seconds, but eventually pops up to the surface again and the trout hit it as
it's rising or breaking the surface. Easy when you know how.
