OT- Crappiefest 2005

Well today was Crappiefest 2005 here in the Pocono Mountains. Dave and I
decided to put off bass fishing for some crappie fishing with cane poles. 2
points for any panfish taken on the cane pole, 1 point for any panfish taken
on the ultralight spinning reel.

We started off slow but Dave started hitting crappie on the cane pole, it
leaped him out to a 20-12 lead, but technical difficulties with his cane
pole gave me a chance to hop right back in with the spinning reel, roaring
back to a 22-20 lead, we went back andf forth a bit but eventually my lead
using the cane pole could not be surpassed. Final score

66-59

All in all it was a lot of fun, I can't wait to take the little ones out and
do some cane pole fishing soon. I boated around 40-50 fish in about 3 hours
with the majority being crappie with a bunch of bluegills and perch mixed
in. I even caught two bass, they were a disapointment as they did not count
in the point standings.

And using the cane pole I stick by my theory that pound for pound Bluegills
are the toughest fighting freshwater fish out there

I had one when I was a kid, but all I ever caught on it was goldfish and a
few rainbow trout. Not much fight when you just lift them out of the water.

Oh, man. You are giving my the urge to go out and buy one of those cane
poles we used to sell in the hardware store for $3.99. Knowing what I know
now about fishing I imagine I could be quite deadly with one. Hmmmm.....

Oh, man those old cane poles were great. 3 or 4 sections and about a
zillion feet long. Came with a hook, and a little plastic spindle of
braided line and a float.

Oh, man. I bet I can give some people a bit of start. Out there with my
big expensive bass boat using a 4 dollar cane pole. Ok. I'm sold. Where
can I get one.

I'm thinking maybe a clear bubble float, and some 1/16th or maybe 1/32 size
jigs.

Here we go.

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...=SearchResults

It only costs aboutr a dollar more than when I was a kid. I notice it comes
with mono now instead of that old green braid.

Ah, here is a nice 14 footer.

Now you got me itching. I do have a fiberglass 10' crappie pole and a 12'
graphite one. Maybe I need to go out and do some panfishing. Hmmmmmm.....
To bad I have to go move a phone system and a server this weekend. Maybe
Monday.

Don't ya just love it! Slapping a cricket using a cane pole is a blast.
I bought 4 for my sister to keep at her place (22 acres and three ponds
connected by channels) and my nephews just love it. Honestly, once the
adults see how it's done, they can't put them down either. I'd better go
grab a few more cane poles to keep in reserve - you never know - the
jiggle rig may put the cane pole farmers out of business.

Amen. If a blue gill ever got to be 4# you'd never land one.
