Can you believe everything you hear at the ramp?

After Joe and I had the boat loaded up last weekend and was getting
everything back in its' place, a guy pulled up beside us in his truck and
was asking how we did. We kinda talked to him for a few minutes and then he
told me something that I find VERY hard to believe...

He said that the TWRA had been doing fish studies in the lake for the past
month or so, shocking them to the surface. One fish they pulled up was a
12lb smallmouth. Of course that would be a new World Record! TWRA refused to
tell anyone where the fish was found, but that it was released alive and
healthy back into the lake.

Tell me... what are the chances? Percy Priest has very little smallmouth
management, and no slot limits to protect larger fish. The biggest smallie
that I've seen from that lake was 6.5lbs. Think it could happen?

I have been hearing that story ever since the lake was impounded. I now
take that story with a grain of salt since, in view of the fishing
pressure over the last 30 years, no one was landed a fish anywhere near
that large. I also think that the introduction of the rockfish and the
hybrid have adversely affected bass fishing on the lake, in spite of
what the TWRA says.

My $00.02 worth.

I have heard that exact story about many different waters. Sometimes its
Game & Fish, sometimes its USFWS, but the story is the same.

They have a story about like that in California...While divers were down
checking the dam's base they spotted a "you name it" world record fish!
But since you can't fish the dam areas of those lakes, the story tellers
contend that's where the "big" smart ones live g! I think they have
just about worn that story out though!

there are stories of Lake Trout 'the size of a man' that divers have
supposedly seen near the bottom of Moosehead Lake in Maine. Fwiw, I have
never actually spoken to any of these divers. I think any tales
involving any fish and all deer must be taken with several grains of
salt, until or unless you see it with your own eyes.

Yep sounds like Decatur too. Dam divers seen catfish that could eat a man,
Mississippi river was shock sampeling and found the IL/IA state record LMB,

But someitmes the story teller can get a rise out of a fellow fisherman.

I tend to disregard these stories for the most part. I have heard the
"shocking crew shocked up a giant SM/LM/pike/brown trout that was way over
the state record" story about so many different lakes over the years it's
ridiculous.

But then again, I'm pretty sure it WAS true one time. We had a DEP guy in
our club, and he had the shocking crew guys come to a meeting, and they had
a polaroid of one of them holding a bass that they said weighed over 14
pounds, and looked very bit of it. It was taken at night (when all the
electrosampling is done in CT) so you couldn't see much of the background,
and they wouldn't tell us what lake it was from.

And I don't know of a lake with more than 50 feet of water in it and a dam
that doesn't also have a story about divers working on/checking the dam
seeing 5 foot (6, 10 whatever) catfish at the base of the dam. I think that
underwater dam repair divers are sworn to promote that story as part of
their job description.

I'd consider the source carefully. I've assisted the NH warmwater biologist
on several shockboat trips. My wife works for NH Fish & Game and also works
closely with the local Army Corps branch. She's not much of a liar, so if
there's only one layer between her and the "reported event", I'm pretty
confident about the accuracy.
