Is it true that in Canada if I want to fish a stream or whatever that
is more than 50 feet from a roadway, I would need to hire a Canadian
guide etc in order to legally fish? Is it any roadway, only paved,
what about trails etc.

No, only Newfoundland has a rule like that and I believe that it is
for Atlantic Salmon only. Each province has its own fishing rules
just like each state has its own rules.

Thank you for removing the veil of ignorance from my eyes.

These sorts of regulalation are made by the (13)
provincial governments, i.e. they vary between provinces.
E.g. New Brunswick has lots of Crown (public) water
but the out-of-province angler can fish there only
with an NB guide.
