Stump Puller Two
 

I asked about stump pullers a while back. Somebody suggested taking a few
wraps around a boat cleat and backing off the boat. With four diagonal
wraps the line just slipped around the cleat when I tried it with some Stren
Super braid. I had to do a couple over and back ties to get it to work.
Then it broke at the cleat instead of at the bait. I think I'll stick with
my piece of shovel handle wrapped with duct tape.

The boat cleat suggestion was by me Bob, the foot on the line while over top
of the cleat is a very, very important part of the technique. Try more wraps
too.The deck shoe should be of the grippy type. Another way, for spinning
reels, is to reel in tight while pointing the rod tip at the snagg and the
rod well under the surface and only holding the reel skirt in your palm with
a closed hand, nothing else, and just pulling. You can put a hell of a lot
of strain on the line till it lets go like this.

Ah, I missed the foot on the cleat part. Not sure it would work 100%. I
usually wear waterproof hiking boots when I fish.

Try using some figure "8"s and standing on the cleat, that should bring your
percentages up to 98%, LOL!!

Ultimately that is what I did when I tried it. I flipped it over twice just
like I was tying the boat off to a dock, and it did break, but it broke at
the cleat.

I have to admit it sounds like a great idea. I only tried it once, and it
didn't work too well that one time. I'll just keep my regular stump puller
in the boat.

I was thinking about this, this morning while having a coffee, I'm pretty
sure I start winding the line so the line from the water goes on the cleat
first, to take up the slack, then go a few turns around and come over the
top of the cleat. Stand on the line that is going to the rod. The rod is
always slack of tension but I use it to keep the line out of the way. Lay
the last wind of line from the outboard side of the cleat toward the
inboard side of the cleat. Lean against the pedestal and pulse the E-motor,
on high, in the opposite direction of the line. Just might be the trick?
My lake is full of snags, it's just second nature to do it in a couple of
seconds. In the late fall, when the weeds a dying it pulls clods of weed up
like a bushel basket and ten feet long.

I was fishing a small river this morning, and hung up a spinner bait
in the brush a couple times. I wrapped the line around the handle of
my landing net 6-8x and tugged. Popped free both times.

Im thinking a 6-8" wrap of duck tape on the handle would help get
more gripping area for the line, and protect it from and sharp edges
from gouges on the aluminum.
