Wiping off motor
 

Hey all, I made a mistake. I didn't wipe off my motor one day after
running in the evening on a dead calm night. Lake Winnebago is FAMOUS
for lake flies, and my laziness has now put me in a position where these
bugs will not come off the motor without some harsh abrasive, and I
definitely want to avoid that.

So , I was hoping somebody could recommend something that will not
scrath the plastic or remove the stickers from the motor. I have tore
up a bunch of old towels, and put them in my truck, so I will never let
this slide again because it makes my $10k investment look like crap!

One of those hand held power steamer wutch-a-macall-its (Shark?) could
rehydrate them and then remove them with a towel BUT be careful about it!!!
There is some brand of windshield wiper antifreeze that has a bug sauce in
it, spray that on and let it sit a spell. Might not even need the steamer
just a window squeegee.

There are a number of bug and tar removal products available from most
automotive stores. Heck, even WD-40 will soften dead bugs, just be careful
not to let it get under the stickers, it will soften adhesives too. You
could always try draping wet, soapy towels over the cowl to soften the bugs.

I use a spray bottle of half vinegar and half purified water to do a once
over on my boat. It seams to work well on lake scum and even hard water
spots. I imagine if you sprayed it on those bgs and let it soak in a little
bit they would probably wipe off ok.

PAM vegetable spray or WD-40 will emulsify them and they'll come off with a
good soap and water. Old Florida trick to get the "Love Bugs" off a car.

In South Florida, we have these nasty little 'love bugs' that will make a
huge mess on the front of your car. I have driven from West Palm Beach to
Orlando - about a 3 hour drive - hitting these things the whole way. They
sound like rain hitting your windshield when you drive through them. They're
about the size of a large house fly, and have really soft bodies. When they
hit the front of your car, windshield, antenna, boat, trailer, etc., they
leave a big cream colored smear. Then that smear dries hard, leaving a
smelly mess that will eat your paint if you don't get it off soon.
I found a fairly easy way to get this nasty mess off the leading surface of
whatever you have driven or towed through them. Set up a sprinkler so it
hits the mess, and let it run for a half hour or so - the longer it runs,
the better. This softens the goo, and you can wipe the mess away with a soft
brush, or terry rag. If you can soak it long enough, you don't have to scrub
very hard, so you don't have to worry about damaging your paint. And a hard
stream of water will get it out of the small openings in your grille,
badges, and trim.

I can't believe no one has yet mentioned using Coca-cola. That was
recommended to me about fifteen years ago for the love-bugs in Florida. It
seemed to do a good job of dissolving the smeared/dried-on bug guts. Just
put some in a spray bottle, moisten the surface, then cover with a cloth
soaked with more Coke. After a few minutes, wipe it clean.

Unlike some of the other solvents, this should have no adverse impact on
your decal adhesive.

Coca Cola is some scary stuff. I use it to clean corroded battery terminals
when ever I do the good sam thing and help somebody out.
