Attempted boat trip to fish the Atlantic...
 

My buddy called me up on Saturday and said he had a friend with a 22' center console boat
and asked If I wanted to go fishing. The objective was to take it out into Sandy Hook Bay
and to fish the Atlantic off of Sandy Hook for; Fluke, Striped Bass and Blue Fish. The
weather on Saturday was fantastic so I said yes. We dropped the boat off in Blackberry Bay,
Oceanport NJ and headed into the Shrewsbury River. Soon after we tried to get up to plane,
the engine (a 90HP 4 cyl. 2-stroke Evinrude) stalled. We started up the engine again and
went a couple hundred feet and it stalled again. The hood of the motor was pulled and a bad
spark plug wire was noted. My buddy played with the wire and we started up the engine
again. The hood was put back on and soon after the engine stalled again. Another
examination noted a second spark plug wire was bad. We again moved a few hundred feet or so
and again it stalled. OK, now we are thinking we have a real problem here. A few more
tries and now the starter was straining indicating that the battery had lost its charge.

We were now stuck in the Shrewsbury River !

After a half an hour we hailed a boat and I hitched a ride back to the launch and left my
buddy with the boat. I then went back to my house and I got my 14' Lowe SeaNymph with a
9.9HP. I went back to Blackberry Bay and dropped in my boat. I went back to my buddy and
towed the boat to the launch.

We went back to my house, washed the salt off the boats and did a couple of shots of JD. My
buddy left and I decided a cool dip in the Ocean was in order [I live a few hundred feet off
the beach]. So I changed and walked up the street to my beach. I took a dip and and
shortly after I saw a couple of guys running along the beach with poles. I looked and saw
some birds working the surface. I realized there was a small school of Blues in the surf
and ran back to the house and got my surf rod. Within the next hour I caught three nice
sized Blues.

I wonder if there is a lesson to be learned in that experience ?
