TR: Lule River Sweden
 

We were up in Northern Sweden for a wedding - great occasion, much
liquidity in the celebrations. I am a trout fisher and I had taken a
minimalist FF kit - 6 piece, 9ft 6" 7 wt Shakespeare rod, floating and
sinking lines and a selection of flies (including a few for sea trout).
The bride's family live in Boden (close to the Arctic Circle), there
was no time for a real outing but I did manage 2h on the Lule below
Boden - in the evening but of course it stayed bright daylight till 11
pm. At Boden there is a hydro-electric plant and a dam without fish
ladder - apparently they net salmon and strip them for breeding. This
is not a small river - I would guess about 400m across below the dam and
fast, deep water. There were lots of fish showing. I could cast far
enough to cover fish but had no takes (quite relieved - some of the
salmon showing were monsters). All this for 75 Kroner (5.50 GBP) for a
day. Apparently the best times are in spring and autumn - lots of salmon
and seatrout caught.
So no fish but we did see a full grown white male reindeer - it corssed
the road just in front of us, and after the fishing ate an excellent
reindeer stew cooked by the bride's father.

Good to hear there are still fish in Sweden. We haven't had any reports
from that contingent in a while. . . :)

Thanks Gordon. I've never tasted reindeer. Is it much like regular
venison?

Yes - very like venison - rich - was cooked in a peppery sauce - delicious
