I tie all my own rigs and never buy pre-made rigs.
I also know a few who carve their own "pencil poppers" as well.

The ones I know are made for surf fishing for Striped Bass and Blue Fish.

I sometimes make some for Bonita and mackerel there about 4” long and work
grate at night
