Massive Chemical Spill wipes out Salmon and Trout in Cheakamus River British Columbia
A massive spill of caustic soda has killed all salmon and trout in the
Cheakamus River North of Vancouver. This year is the high cycle for pink salmon in southern BC. The Cheakamus supported runs of a million or more fish into the 1950's but the run was entirely destroyed by a hydro-electric development with 10 years. Restoration work had restored the run to 150,000 plus fish by 2003 but a 100 year flood in that year greatly reduced fry survival. Substantial numbers of adult pinks were in stream when the spill occurred as were mature king salmon and 3 year classes of juvenile steelhead. and the 2004 class of coho. Some fish have survived in artificial spawning and rearing channels plus a small hatchery: http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=379377 http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2...164632-cp.html http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...ub=CTVNewsAt11 images: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/member/gallery/album33 |
