NJ - Monmouth County - Sandy Hook - School of Sting Rays in Navesink River
Yesterday (8/13) I was fishing about 100 yards east of the Oceanic Bridge and
spotted what looked like a school of big bluefish. But the splashes were a bit unusual, not typically energetic like blues. After casting into the school, my young niece caught a large sting ray. I estimate it was at least 3 ft across. It snapped her line just as I put my large net (which can easily hold large stripers) under one of its wings. As we looked around we saw other odd splashes with large fins sticking out of the water (apparently the tips of the wings). I thought they were dolphins because of the way the water was pushed out of the way. My nephew hooked a few more (they just peeled off the line when they were hooked), but because we only had 10lb test, the line was snapped very time. Just wanted to report this. They definitely were not skates as I have caught skates previously in my life. Air temp was 84F and water temp felt like bath water. Time was approx 7pm.
