Fly fishing in Norway?
Anybody ever fly fish in Norway? I'm thinking of heading out there in
a couple of weeks, spending a week fly fishing, driving and camping (or other cheap accomodation) in between -- all on the advice of a fishing (but spin-fishing) friend. Anyone have any experience or info about fly fishing out there in, say, early September? Thanks, Tim |
Tim,
I fished there 20 years ago, in the Valdres region and near the Sogne fijord on the west coast. I fished small streams for brown trout, because the big rivers were running high in June. Also, the big salmon and seatrout rivers were mostly privately-owned, and one had to pay big fees to fish a limited stretch of river. I was told the best time to fish for the big sea-run brown trout was in September, for what it's worth. John |

Right, a clarification: I'd be happy to fish for the big sea run
browns, or salmon for which the area is known... but I've also heard that many of those rivers are privately owned. I'm more of a 5-weight dry fly kind of guy, generally, so anything of the more regular-sized trout would be great too... |
I fished the upper Glama a few years ago, mainly for grayling and small
browns. Pretty river, although it is a pain that there are different licenses required for roughly every 2km of river. Can't exactly remember where I drove up to, but could dig out the information if you're interested. Locals rent out rooms along the river and we found they were nice (although local fishermen gave us the cold shoulder). Cheers, Troy |
