Salmon
 

Went fly fishing over the bank holiday - river very low - about 12" down on
last season.I was completely staggered by looking down at a pool and seeing
15 / 20 + salmon in about 6ft of crystal clear water. During a period of
about 3 hours watched 15lb + fish to 5/6 lb lying with several just cruising
around, all silver fish - what a sight!

Here in the Swansea valley we're entering the silly season when the EA
usually start on their erosion prevention schemes or flood defence
schemes and the river runs filthy. Any salmon that make it to the
spawning redds probably suffer from scilicosis !

A couple of salmon have been take recently - fish of around the 6 lbs
mark

Had a look up the Ribble below Settle yesterday for a couple of hours
with the fly - no sign of any showing yet although I know there are
fish further down stream

Forgot to mention - tried every fly in the box! - no takers, mind you the
sun was high and bright - thats my excuse!Will be up there again 5/6 times
before 31/10 and will post again.

Next time I meet this situation on an otherwise slow day I mean to try a
version of an old prawner's trick: Lead core line, -short- leader and a
big, fluffy booby.

Manouevre the line so that the fly swims directly beneath the largest fish's
belly. You will probably scare it off the lie in the process. Let the line
lie on the bottom. Sit still, watch and wait. As long as it's not too
scared the fish will return to its lie which now has an irritating extra.

With luck the fish will slowly get more and more annoyed until it siezes the
fly in order to evict it from its position. Over to you.
