I guess fishing out for a while
 

Due to hurricane Katrina, many of my fishing areas a have been totally
destroyed. Traveling to those areas will be limited for a while to local
residences.

I due to go back to work Monday and probably will not have any days off for
the next month or two. Many of my fellow employees had their homes
destroyed.

This disaster is hard to take being filtered through the news media. You
wonder how well you would do in that situation.

Well my I and my family being in Southern Mississippi I can tell you how we
are doing, including my 14 year old daughter. First there is no Power, so we
use a Generator. No AC, so we sleep with the windows open. Trees down on the
house, the guy with a crane and chainsaw is coming today, 1800 dollars to
remove trees. No TV in Hattiesburg, so reading books and playing board
games. The pool pump dont work but as loong as its shocked and clear we can
still use the pool. No food but the SA and RC are feeding Lunch and Dinner
every day. Some things are back to normal by now though, Almost all the
restaraunts are open and a lot of the city has power again. Insurance agents
are arriving en masse, daughters house has $20,000 in damage but no other
losses except for 5 giant pines. This isnt the first time for me, I was
raised in Maryland and lived there when Agnes went through in 72, I was a
boyscout and we were called out to do cleanup, saw everything first hand. In
the last 10 years we had damage and power knocked out by both Danny and
George. The biggest problem right now is no gas, we were able to put in 5
gallons but the president has got to get this fuel problem under control
along with everything else.

My friend has (had !) a business in Delacroix Louisiana. "Brian's Bayou Adventure" fishing
charter service{ http://www.rodnreel.com/captbrian/ } . He is an excellent fisherman and
has even been on an ESPN fishing show. Unfortunately his home and business have been
comepletely wiped out. He is a former Jerseyite and he is coming back here Today to live
with another friend for a while since he is now homeless.

In spite of it all you sound lucky compared to some people. Besides the
trees was there any real damage to the house? The lack of food and A/C would
bother me the most.

I am an assistant scoutmaster here and I was wondering if the scouts are
helping in your area.

Fuel is a big problem every where. I just got to where I can afford a new
truck and after the sticker shock for the truck I have to deal with the
sticker shock for the fuel.

If you bought a diesel you can come out ahead on the fuel cost believe it or
not. Diel is a little less costly.
My F350 dualie w 4.10 gears averaged 19.4 mpg on the last trip without the
fifth wheel for 2800 miles total. On level highways we got around 20.4 mpg
but my wife drove and kept it around 1900rpm or 63 mph.

I was a Boy Scout in Maryland when Agnes hit in 72. Our troop was sent to
help clean up Patapsco State Park and Catonsville Maryland. Yes, the Boy
Scouts are a good organization.

George, friends of mine were giving me a hard time this year when unleaded
was less than diesel fuel. Now, in my area, diesel is anywhere between 10
and 30 cents a gallon cheaper! Have you considered a diesel pickup truck?
They're not as noisy and smelly as they once were. I love my Duramax.

No damage other then some skirting around my residence. My brother in
Slidell had 5 foot of water in his home and he lost everything. His wife
and kids along with his mother-in-law moved in with my sister for right now.
Once power is restored in Pearl River, they will move in with his
Mother-in-law, since she has no damage to her home. He has not been able to
do much with his damaged home since he was required to report to duty for
the Coast Guard. He ha snot been able to contact his insurance or FEMA for
aid.

I gave my wife 300 dollars to go and buy the kids some clothes, toys and
food for my sisters home. My mother and father put up 300 to get my brother
and sister-in-law some clothes.

He is so frustrated. The only good news he had was his boat was in the
garage and it floated up to the ceiling and put a hole in the ceiling. The
boat did not get damaged. The bad news is he may have to sell it to help
repair his home since FEMA , flood insurance and home owners insurance don't
pay for everything.
