Fall Fishing

Got a call from my buddy Tim yesterday asking if I wanted to do some fishing
early this morning. Considering I haven't been out much due to the cold
nasty weather, rain, snow etc. and when I was the bite just was not there. I
jumped at the chance.

Woke this morning at 5 a.m to 49 degree temps, not bad considering most
days have been in the 30's when I wake up.
I met Tim at the lake at 6 a.m and it was just beautiful, no wind and
baitfish rising on the surface out in open water. We decided right away to
hit those spots, hoping for some bass or anything else that would bite.
Nada!! I had marked some spots on my GPS this year out in deeper water where
I caught some decent fish in late summer. I figured we would hit those spots
up before heading to the other side of the lake.

We wanted to use some of the baits we have been pouring to see if we could
get some fish to bite. Well it wasn't a ton of fish but we did manage 3 nice
keepers in 2 hours. I was especially happy when I felt a small thump, I set
the hook and my line started moving a bit. Wasn't sure if I hooked into a
stick or a log. Felt nice and when the line started moving further away, I
knew I had a fish, no fight whatsoever. Like reeling in a wet sock, only
much heavier. When I saw the head poke out of the water, I yelled at Tim to
turn around and grab the fish. It was a nice fish, no shake at the boat or
anything, good thing too cause the wacky rig hook I had was just barely
inside it's lip. He grabbed it by the lip and pulled it into the boat. We
threw it on the scale and it came in at 5 pounds 14 ounces. Took a few
pictures and let it go. Tim caught two bass on the Klik-n-Stix we poured,
both came in at a respectable 2 lbs 5 ounces and 2 pounds 6 ounces. I wish I
would have had more time, We probably could have had a few more fish each
considering how nice it was this morning. But 1 fish over 5 lbs on November
1st will always make me smile. Posted pictures at a.b.p.f

That was a dandy fish and would make me smile too! Gil and I actually had a
day today where he wasn't guiding and I didn't have anything so pressing
that it couldn't wait until tomorrow. It warmed up to 48 today and we
decided, the heck with it, we're going fishing. I hooked up the boat and we
went to one of our favorite muskie lakes.

I caught one muskie and we were working the edge of some bullrushes that
drop into 12 feet of water when I saw a fish following the 8 inch crankbait
that I was twitching and jerking. At first, I thought it was a muskie, as
they are notorious for following lures. As it neared the boat, it didn't
look like a muskie and I thought "walleye." Finally, the lure was about 8
feet from the gunnel when it dawned on me that I was looking at the biggest
smallmouth I've ever seen!!!

I twitched and jerked the lure as enticingly as I could, but smallmouth
don't hit lures on figure 8's even though it did follow through one
revolution. I saw it quite closely and it's a LOT bigger than Gil's 7 pound
smallmouth that he has on the wall.

I guess I'm going to have to fish that lake for smallies a lot more. But it
sure felt good to be in the boat.

Oh yeah, and I find I'm having a harder time getting enthused about ice
fishing as I get older. At least I have hunting to help pass the time.

Pat, do you have any idea how hard it is to do anything at 11,200 feet of
elevation in the mountains, much less smile????
