Fly Material Help Needed - 2nd attempt with pic link
Hi All,
I am trying to find stuff to reproduce a fly for my father. The fly in the upper photo has a red plastic body between the tube/hair and the beads. Does anyone know where I can find something like that? That fly is something like 35 years old. My dad trolls with thede behind a dodger and down-rigger for salmon and lake trout in Lake Michigan. http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/967...ing00082wk.jpg I ordered a tube tying adapter for my vise this weekend to help me with the tube part with the hair. I can find everything else, just no luck so far on the red body. I also imagine polar bear hair which is what these were originally tied with is hard to get if not illegal right? I will likely use deer hair or some synthetic. wayne |

These beads are often used on sal****er traces for various purposes. Many tackle shops will have them, but usually far too expensive. They are cheap enough at craft stores though. Chainstores like Woolworth, Wal-mart etc will also usually have a selection. Polar bear is indeed difficult to acquire. There is a range of other things you can use though; http://www.bearlodgeangler.com/synthetic_hair.htm http://flyfisherman.com/ftb/ssmaterials/index12.html Natural materials, such as yak hair, and bucktail will both work on such streamers. For hair with more intrinsic mobility, go for Icelandic sheep, Arctic fox ( although you may have trouble getting this long enough), or similar. TL MC |

It seems that the beads etc on these flies are mainly being used as
"spacers". You can simply use another piece of tube, or any other beads for this. Just a little tip, if you can get them "mother-of-pearl" or similar "holographic" beads are often very effective on such things. You can find practically any type of bead on the net. Here just a couple of examples; http://www.firemountaingems.com/plastic_beads.asp http://www.thebeadery.com/beads.htm http://www.china-accessories.com/bead/ http://www.dickblick.com/zz607/16/ http://www.creative-wholesale.com/Beads.htm http://www.worthco.com/fish/fluorescent.html TL MC |

I am looking for the RED thing on the upper fly. It is tapered. Fatter at
one end than the other. It is a molded plastic thing. wayne "Mike Connor" wrote in message ... It seems that the beads etc on these flies are mainly being used as "spacers". These were often used for making lure bodies etc. Try here; http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/Items.a...s&disp=gallery http://www.barlowstackle.com/acb/sho...ctGroup_ID=654 TL MC |

It's kinda hard to see a lot of detail on "the RED thing on the upper fly". Fortunately, the world is full of molded plastic things, fatter at one end than the other. Try Wal-Mart. Wolfgang |

Wayne, I have sent you an email with a picture. From the picture that
you posted it looks like it might be a bead that was used for making spinners. I had bought some beads like that many years ago from Herters. You might be able to find something similar from a company that sells lure making materials. Wayne P wrote: Hi All, I am trying to find stuff to reproduce a fly for my father.
