SBC Communications will introduce a Cingular cell phone next year that links to Yahoo content which could include satellite and maps. Googles new tool, called Google Local for mobile, is available on a test basis today and works with certain handsets from Cingular Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA. The software also allows users to search for driving directions and zoom in and out of digital maps. Google doesn't charge for the service, although data fees may be levied by the carriers. The service isn't available on Blackberry devices made by Research in Motion or handsets by Palm. Unlike Google's search engine on the Web, users won't see ads alongside searches on their cell phones. SBC phone will let users access Yahoo services including photos, instant messaging and e-mail, according tp San Antonio-based SBC. The phone will be made by Nokia Oyj. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo had no comment. |
