Survey, What grade gas do you use?
 

I'm just curious has to what grade gas most people use. Is it really a waste
of money to use high test in a 20 yr old motor?

Use what the manufacturer recommends. It's been proven on dynos over many
years on 2 cycle engines of many kinds that high test does not increase
horsepower, it improves the longevity of the engine conponents, most notably
pistons, if the engine recommends premium, rarely does it do any good either
way on engines designed to run regular and in fact can decrease the
available horsepower.
The last tests I did on a motocross bike showed that regular produced 1.6 hp
more than premium, av gas or race gas. It also knocked and binged big time
over any load over 75% and holed a piston in under twenty minutes on the
dyno.

I burn premium fuel in my outboard, but that's only because that's what
Mercury Marine recommends for my particular motor. My other boats burned
regular.

I agree, but keep in mind the older engines were built and books written
when unleaded gas was used y very few people. Its the unleaded part and all
the new additives used that has me wondering.

The rule of thumb is use the lowest grade gas your engine will burn without
pinging. None of my outboards ping with regular. If they did I'ld just add
some marine grade octane booster. I have a 200HP Mercury Mariner fuel
injected, a force 50 carberated, a MErcury 150HP carburated, and a 5HP Sears
contract built motor. They all run regular just fine.

Only one of my service trucks needs super. Its the one with the smallest
engine. I suspect that little four banger is tweaked out and the timing is
advanced in order to get enough power out of it to pull itself. It pings on
regular so I run super in it. My big 2500Hd with the V-8 runs great on
regular. So does the S-10 truck with the fuel injected V-6. Even after
reprogramming the onboard computer for a little better performance. The
programmer did allow for programming it to use higher octane gas, but the
performance program set for regular was adequate for use as a work truck.

Not only that, but the premium octane fuels have additives that do not
interact well with the additives found in most outboard two cycle oil. I'd
keep using regular in your older motor.
