Hello. Two questions:

*Is the SA System One reel being redesigned? If so, when?

*Who makes SA reels? I've heard that Orvis makes the reel, and I've also
heard that SA makes the reel and other Orvis reels.

I don't know, but I'd bet long odds on SA making the reels. Actually,
now that I think about it, SA probably outsources the making of the
reels. Orvis is merely a brand these days.

Hi Guys,
Gotta go with the outsourcing. When I was in South Korea from '90-'91,doing
some military stuff, I met a guy, who ended up being my fishing partner
while there, who knew a guy, who knew a guy, etc.
What resulted is that we were introduced to a rod manufacturer and a reel
manufacturer west of Seoul.
The reel manufacturer was making reels for several companies. . . SA was
one. ( at that time it was the charcoal gray kinda color with a silver
colored palming rim) And there were many different reels, for different
companies.

Orvis bought British Fly Reel Company over 5 and less than 10 years ago.
That company made reels for everyone at the time. For some time Orvis made
the low end SA reels. I am not sure if Orvis still does now though.


Orvis has an impressive lineup of reels this year. (USD in trout size 5/6)

Clearwater disc drag = $39

Original Battenkill which was made in England is going overseas now = $79
(down from $98) They sold thousand of these over the years.

Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock (full machined) = $99 (down from $129) Very nice
reel for $100. Has been around and is a solid light reel.

Orvis Mid Arbor = $119 (their best selling reel). Redington and Pflueger use
this same platform. Good solid reel.

The Redington CD version has a superior Koyo Japanese one way kneedle
bearing and a cork drag so it is the best of these for the serious angler.

Actually today there are so many reels you can't even see them all, let
along stock them all.

We try to stay with consitant manufacturers so we can get warranty work,
service, parts and extra spools.

A good example is Ross Reel Company who dominate the fly reel industry in
the USA. They have a lifetime warranty on their reels and have parts and
spools for everything they have made over the years. This is important if
you buy a reel over $100 and want to be able to keep it running and get an
extra spool from time to time.

Thjat would be the older version of the System One. Same as the old
Daiwa 706s and 708s. Nice reels. But the British made System Ones are
lighter and made to tighter tolerances. Don't know if BFR makes them
or another British firm. They are great reels.
